That pre-printed, partially finished cross-stitched quilt top that I bought at auction was clearly meant to be hand quilted because in addition to the stamped cross-stitch "Xs" there are also pre-printed "dashes"

Thank you Jeanine! That's what I needed to know. I want the finished cross-stitched part of the quilt to be one consistent unit--that's the way the pattern is designed and will look best. When I first acquired the unfinished top, I assumed it would have to be seamed, but then I read something about basting that made me question my assumption
