I agree that you should quilt the fish. I have quiled appliqué before and the thing you should do ia use a heavier weight thread because when the needle punches through the fabric it will leave a hole, the thicker thread helps fill the hole so it is not so noticeable. good luck, Karen

I have done a couple quilts with scalloped edges, and as Judy Lee replied, I do the Eleanor Burn's method. It is easy to leave the quilt square, but draw your scalloped edges onto your quilt so you can see where your edges will be and where to end your quilting. It is so much easier than I thought it would be, after my first scalloped quilt, I have

Bonnie, great quilting for this quilt. I enjoy doing ruler work, it is time consuming but I find it so relaxing that I get lost in a time warp when doing it.

Welcome Sarah, This is a great site, you are so blessed to be able to quilt with your mum! Mine is an artist but also enjoy quilting with me when I come back to North America for the summers......the count down is on, I come back in 1 week for 4 months, I will miss my mid arm but will get to see my family and get some tops ready for quilting.
