Yes, they go in a row (side by side) and then the rows are put together. If you don't turn the blocks, they don't need to be square. Just up and down alternating and you will be fine.

Nana, gotchya covered for the backing! Figuring the top to finish around 55' X 66" with all borders (if not doing last border use 1/2 yard less for backing) I came up with backing requirements (allowing for margins required by most LMQs) to be 3-1/2 yards. This would be cut in half crosswise at 1-3/4 yard and a seam sewn to make the piece 65

Border/background are not yet cut-so my may have 1 LARGE quilt or 2 smaller ones. Sounds like my pile of cut fabrics-I want to make 2 while I am at it-saves having to go back and cut some more when my ADD brain has already moved on to other things.

Barbara, Had to laugh when I saw the date on the photo-at least I am not the only one with "buy now, use later" fabric! Bev in Indiana

Lyubov, any fabrics you like that you have enough of will do. I look at these mystery quilts as "make me happy" quilts. Years ago I was making one and, half way through piecing it, I realized it was predominently

If you decide to not use them , send them my way! What an incredible assortment of fabric-will have the look of a scrap quilt! Bev in Indiana

You are right- layouts with 40 squares don't work. I usually go to 42 and lay they out 7X6 and that gives me a good sized quilt for most purposes! Not sure how may blocks I will get out of the pile of fabric I pulled this morning. Going to use up a bunch of old calicos and other prints from last century. Should be fun! Bev in Indiana
