The pattern is called Spinning Cards and is a variation of Card Trick. Card Trick is done with only 4 sections and is not as dramatic. It is usually done in a smaller size - 12 inch block. It appears that I'm a bit late in answering the question. I was taught to use a neutral color of thread for piecing - generally an off-white/beige or gray. Gray is better on dark fabrics. If ever in doubt lay a strand of thread across the fabric and use the one that shows the least. This works well for choosing thread for quilting also, whether

Short term is not a problem. Many plastic boxes are now manufactured and labeled acid free - specificly for scrapbookers and quilters.. Cardboard is not acid free and can cause a reaction in fabric. However, I have not seen any information on how long it takes to do damage. I have used cardboard boxes for storage - fabric and projects - in many cases

Machine washing would produce nothing but a ravelled mess. Small pieces should be washed by hand only. As for shrinkage problem - most fabrics today don't shrink enough to be a problem. However, when being given scraps some may have been pre-washed and some may not have. In that case my preference would be to wash all before using. Washing produces
