    I'm going to wade into this one, although as it's been noted, thread and needles are a personal preference, and there are no hard or fast rules. That said, I find silk thread to be the best for applique, and very, very short needles. I'm using Clover quilting needles (no. 12). Yes, silk is more expensive, but it's only for hand applique
