    Marianne, If your new to quilting and you do not know the answer to this maybe you need to do a practice piece first. Applique takes a little practice and Im sure you would not want to mess up a big quilt. The answer to your question is you applique first and then quilt. Hope this helps! Susan

    Candis, Your hankie butterflies are just beautiful!!! I wish I had known you were collecting them as I have a bunch from my Mom and MIL who would be 97 if she were alive so you can tell they how old they are. I cant wait to see a pic of this lovely quilt . Your Aunt must be one special lady and you are too for making this quilt for her. Susan

    I do not pre wash my fabric . I do iron and use Magic Sizing spray as it is recommended by several quilt instructors. After comparing it to heavier starch I like the results better. Susan

    Pam, I live in North Florida and use warm and natural batting. Its not heavy or to warm like a comforter would be. I also use flannel for batting in my baby quilts sometimes. Susan
