I saw one of these done in blues and thought "ho hum".  So, I used a cherry swirl fabric and am having trouble focussing on the front of it for any length of time.  I think my eyes are on cherry overload.  The borders are next, then there are star apliques to complete it.  I am at a stage now where I have to figure out how to cut a 49 1/2 inch square out of this before I can put the borders on.  My problem was that all I can see are the twisty red parts.  I'm thnking tissue paper....

I changed the pattern and cut out some freehand hearts instead of the stars that the pattern used.  Now I think it should be called "Love is the ultimate optical illusion."

Too dreary a day to take it outside for pictures.  All quilted and bound and ready to go 2/27/2014.

Wow!  I'm trying to figure out how this went together.  It will be fun to see it again when you are done.

Wow. This is really graphic in red and white. What a stunner. How about using a 90 degree laser level to square up and cut the 49 1/2 square. Google "laser level to square quilting" if you haven't tried this before. Works for me.

Wow, Awesome effort. I'm guessing that you used strip piecing and a 9 or 10 degree wedge ruler? 'Can't wait to see what becomes of it when you move on to the next stage. Will the dizzying effect cause you trouble with your appliques?

Great idea for squaring it, Denise!

Problem solved.  I used old christmas wrapping paper, made a template 24 3/4 x 49 1/5.  Folded it in half and used the template to trim.  At issue really was that for some reason my longest pieces were't long enough to allow for 49 1/2 inches...that was the problem all along, actually....so I added some corner pieces and went from there.  15 degree wedge ruler, actually.  After I got the borders on, I didn't have the same queazy feeling as before the borders calmed things for my eyes.  Whodda thunk it?  LOL

Strip piecing and a wedge ruler, huh?  It looks like that requires a lot of seam matching, then.  Great job on that and on getting it to lie flat.  I'd have at least a B cup if I had attempted it.  Well done!  Love the applique you've added.

I starched and ironed really hard to make the middle lay flat before I added the center button.  I was a little concerned, with over 40 seams hitting in the same area.  The inner parts of those fans were just wide enough at the bottom to place two 1/4 seams without lapping them.  I held my breath....a lot. :)

Well done!  I've been wanting to make this pattern for years, I just don't have the guts to try!  Love it!

This is beautiful.  At first I assumed you used the method described in Simply Stunning Woven Quilts by Anna Faustino page 54 to achieve this circle.  But your method would also work.  The idea for the background for my Autumn Wonders came from that book.  Love the look of your quilt and yes, I'm sure your eyes were swimming while you worked on the circle part.  Worth the work though!
