A family member and his family were doing a 2 year Armed Forces post to Washington and I wanted to do something symbolic for them.

The quilt is a colorwash idea, with more than a dozen Australian fabrics. There are banksia, wattle, gumnuts, koalas, platypus, kangaroos and a lot more.

The quilt was fun to piece together but a nightmare to quilt. I literally cried trying to machine quilt on my Pfaff. The many seams just would not allow it. There were broken needles, broken thread, tears and more tears and even a hole. I was defeated and rapidly reaching their departure date.

Desperation, and a friend's longarm did the job. The machine quilting is of a eucalypt and gumnut design, perfect for the Australian theme.
