Hand Embroidered 18-inch Star Blocks, sashed with burgundy & bordered with pieced Ohio Stars trimmed with light blue. King size. Finally ready to quilt.
This quilt took years in the planning stages...
This is one of those I did not follow a set pattern but, the whole quilt was dependant on the fabrics available. This quilt actually started with 18-inch blocks that are sold pre-stamped for hand embroidery. My Mom selected and worked the embroidery for a wedding present. I was given the blocks to make into a quilt on my own. I studied them for years and eventually decided on fabrics that matched her embroidery thread. I looked for years for an appropriate type of star to make the border out of (had to be 8-point). While piecing the border stars, my husband had purchased an overlock machine as my birthday present one year, so while experimenting with 2 different machine for the small star blocks piecing...the pieced blocks sewn on the overlock were not the same size as the pieced stars that were sewn on a straight stitch machine (again seam allowances do make all the difference in the world). So, these smaller overlocked blocks were set aside and more blocks had to be pieced with exacting seam allowances. Eventually it all came together just fine, adjusting to fit with additional sashing strips.
