I took the advice and saved a strip of the starting material, and pieced it into the backing. I was looking for something with animals or fish, but this surfaced on discount and it was a go. For a "I'll just try a few hexagons and see how this works", it turned out to be a fun and pretty project in the end. So I did another one as a donation to an ovarian cancer fundraiser {lol}. Really like the mystery of how each hex will turn out and then the creativity you get to put them all together into a unique layout.
