This quilt was inspired after attending the 1996 Olympic Games Quilts exhibit. Having never tried making a water color quilt, I bought a book to learn the basics. It took me about 4-1/2 years to make starting from creating the pencil sketch design, assembling over 5,000 2" squares, and hand quilting the layers. The technique required so many squares to choose from that I have since created 2 twin bed quilts from the leftovers. I also created an additional king sized spread, "Leftovers", but had to supplement it with new fabrics.  As an added note: I purchased a fish patterned fabric and only learned after the quilt was finished and on my bed that the "skeletons" of the fish glowed in the dark! It has been a running joke about the quilt ever since.

This is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!  You have done beautiful job!  I've been wanting to make a postage stamp quilt and have started collecting my 2" squares, but mine will not be as pretty as this.  I intend for mine to just be scrappy.  I wouldn't have the patience to think out such a stunning design.  Thanks for sharing!!!

Thank you so much for your compliment of Floating Squares. I used the leftover squares to do a scrap version. It came out just as pretty as I know yours will. Best of luck with yours :)

What a long journey from inspiration to this piece of art.  Truly worth it, Dawn.  This is fabulous.

Thank you Q. Only another quilter would appreciate that journey. After 14 years of enjoying it though it is now retired and "Leftovers" has taken its place. Floating Squares will be restored and preserved for my daughter. BTW - I keep forgetting to add that it has some glow in the dark squares. There was a fish patterned fabric I bought and only learned after I finished the quilt that the "skeletons" of the fish glowed! Anyway, I am now collecting snips of trims and assorted fabrics for my next project, a king size Crazy Quilt.

Oh my this is so beautiful!!  It was well worth the time it took you to make it!  I love the glowing fish story too!  Ha!
