Turtle Prayer Quilt

MNnancy there is never a dumb question as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for asking. After the quilt is complete, long threads of #5 Pearl cotton are stitched in the center of the blocks and left untied. We present the quilt to the church, saying who the quilt is for and what prayers are needed. After service the quilt is placed on a table and everyone (individually) says a silent prayer for the recipient and ties a knot in the pearl cotton thread. Each knot represents a prayer. Knots can be tied on top of knots, prayers on top of prayers. The recipient is then covered in everyone's prayers.

If you look closely, for instance at the blue one in the upper right corner, you can see the thread in the center of the turtle shell. This picture was taken before the knots were tied/prayers were said. Leaving the threads long (I cut them 5 to 6 inches) it allows for multiple knots on one thread and it makes it easier for tying.
