Quilted Butterfly wall hanging

The butterfly was first created by my sister Pat Murdie, who used Sharpies and alcohol on a piece of natural muslin.  She filled in areas with Lumiere paints!  I thought it was so cool, that I asked her if I could quilt it.  After coming up with a quilting design, I went to town on it.  I was 3/4's of the way finished with the quilting when I recently pulled my studio apart and a glass of water spilled on it, causing the inks to spread as it wasn't yet heatset.  I went about trying to fix the bleed and used a strong wrong color.  The piece was ruined, or so I thought!  I thought to myself, well, it's ruined, I might just as well have fun...  so I did.  A box of Sharpies and a half bottle of alcohol later, this is the result!  I think I fixed it!

So very beautiful.  It's nice to see the creativity stirred when an accident happens.

Lori, what a "happy mistake" this turned out to be!  Stunning to say the least!

Could you explain your sisters process a little?  Sounds very interesting.

Thank you all for the wonderful compliments everyone!

Marie, my sister drew an outline of the butterfly with a black sharpie.  She then went in and colored it in with Sharpies and alcohol.  When that was done, she detailed it with Jacquard Lumiere paints and glitter paint. It was a free hand drawing.

This is beautiful. My ten year old granddaughter thinks she wants it for in her room, even tho it would clash with all her horse stuff.

This is true work of art...I love it! Your thread painting is exquisite!   I am going to try the sharpies and alcohol again.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Wow, what an amazing mistake you make. It is absolutely gorgeous, breathtaking, prachtig (Dutch). Sharpies and alcohol? I don't know if there are sharpies overhere, but I'll start looking for them, or something similar.
