Crystal Sunset

Inspired by a snowstorm between Christmas 2010 and New Year's Day . A few days later low mist and layers of cirrostratus ice clouds produced a sunset that looked like the northern lights.  After a Christmas visit to Mom's I drove home through the prettiest winter landscape I have ever seen.   It was like being inside an opal.

40 x 29 inches, hand dyed, overdyed  and commercial cottons.  Machine pieced  and raw edge machine qpplique.  Made without fusible webbing.

What a beautiful quilt.  The subject, the dyed fabrics, the way you put them together.  I love how the colors are lightly reflected in the snow. It does give one the impression of being in an opal.

This reminds me of one time when I was in a rainbow.  I know you are only supposed to see them at a distance, but when I rounded a corner, suddenly it seemed like colors were bouncing off the hood of the car, a shimmering rainbow mist all around me.

I just love art quilting.  Haven't done it in about 25 yrs. but sure would like to start again.  Your Crystal Sunset is truly stunning.  When I looked at it I thought this woman has inspired me.  Thank you for sharing.  Lynda

I am also inspired. I had been looking at some pictures I took over the summer of a stormy lake breaking against rocks. I have often thought it would be neat to make a quilt, but had no idea on how to go about it. Thanks so much for sharing this work of art.

Great Art Quilt, its stunning!  You should join the art quilt group on QCA.  I too live in an area with cold clear winter days and love the ice-crystals glissening in the sunshine.  But, I haven't figured out how to get that in a quilt yet!

This is one of those kinds of quilts that would grab your attention at an art quilt show.  Breathtaking!  Really beautiful!

I love landscape quilts; you did a wonderful job with your inspiration in turning it into a quilt!
