Thread Painting of Max

I completed this thread painting of my best friend's collie dog, Max.  Max died of cancer several years ago.  I am giving this to her in a couple of weeks as a surprise.   I turned a picture of Max into an applique and put down the base, then thread painted it with rayon thread.  I used Angelina fiber for his eye shine, and I used some Shiva paint for the painted spots on the butterflies, then stitched over it.

Excellent job.  I would like to learn thread painting. It looks hard to me.

Our dog Honey (a pitt/lab mix) died of cancer last fall.  How I would love to do something like this as a remembrance to her.  Is thread painting hard?  Do you need an embroidery machine?

Wow! That is beautiful, and it looks very realistic! I am sure it took forever, but your friend will definitely appreciate the effort!

This is absolutely beautiful and I'm sure your friend will treasure it.  Dogs (and cats) really are part of our families.

Thanks to you all for your kind comments about this project.

To answer your question, Karla, no you don't need an embroidery machine and no it isn't that hard, but it takes a LOT of time and patience!  I do a "trial run" for every thread and fabric before I put it on the final product, which takes a lot of the time.

I learned this particular thread painting technique (there are several out there) from Melinda Bula, in a class at a quiltfest last summer.  You can look her up on line - she has a website - and she has written several books explaining how to do this.

What a wonderful gift.  Beautiful job.  I would like to do something of this of our dear companion Tyler, a Bernese Mountain dog we lost this last late winter.  It will take a while before I have that kind of talent however.
