Birds and Blooms Applique Quilt

This quilt top was discovered in a basement with most of the applique pinned or basted in place.  Unfortunately many of the pins had left rust marks and other stains were also on the quilt.  It was given to me if I wanted to try to save it and after many hours of different treatments most of the stains were removed and I began to finish up the basting.  Jean Hildebrand an amazing quilter at our local senior center taught me how to hand applique and I spent about five years off and on stitching the applique pieces.  Jean passed away before the quilters at Rock River Center began to work on this quilt for me but she truly encouraged me to quilt.

Thank you all for your comments I should have done a better photo that showed the row of tulips around the scolloped edge.  The same green of the branches was used for binding.  I am new to QCofA so didn't know if I could add another photo.

You did really good Melody Proud of you.  Pictures never do show everything you want them to and a lot of the time they show things that are not important.  Good Job.

Thank you all for the compliments.  I am in awe of the beauty created by the QCA members and have enjoyed exploring a few galleries so far.

Getting the stains and rust out of the quilt was trial and error over a period of time.  Lemon juice and sunshine took some out and lightened others.  Rit rust remover dabbed on and rinsed took more and diluted bleach applied with a Q-tip and rinsed carefully got the rest.  I then put the quilt in an old pillow case and washed it on gentle with a dye catching sheet.  The quilt would have not been worth the effort if I could not get the stains out first.

It's a beautiful quilt and the story of where it was found along with your hours of love and care to remove the stains makes it more beautiful. Too bad the woman who encouraged you to finish it up was unable to see the finished product. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of art.
