I started the blocks to this 9-patch many years ago, when my kids were very young. I knew nothing about quilting and cut a square from cardboard and traced it for my pieces. So a few of the blocks are not as perfect as they could have been, as some pieces were not quite perfect. I made enough blocks for about half a quilt and put them away because I had 2 more babies, and never got back to the blocks. About 5 years ago I picked up the extra pieces and put them together, then found out about cutting mats and rotary cutters and cut the last pieces, which I used for the last blocks. A friend who had been quilting for a number of years already, but is in another state, said after I put the top together she would come and help me layer and put on a quilt frame and show me how to hand quilt. She was so kind to give me her old quilt frame that her husband had made and she didn't use anymore. I am still using it and it works great for me. My friend quilted some on my first quilt. When my mom visited from out of state I had her quilt some, and both of my daughters quilted some on it. Also a cousin that visited. All of them putting some stitches on my first quilt made it worth even more to me than the simple quilt that it is.
I put a clam shell pattern on the border. It was so much fun quilting on a pattern.
