This is the first sewing project that got me into quilting.  My cousin made a quilt like this for her bed when we were in high-school and I loved it.  I decided that I needed to make myself one, but then took 4 years to start.  I was in college and one day I saw one of my roommates with her sewing machine sewing.  I had put it in my mind that I could not start quilting or sewing until I was finished with school.  So, I entered a fabric store for the first time alone in my life bought a rotary cutter, mat, fabric and batting.  It took me four years to finish this quilt while I finished my bachelors and master's degrees, got married, got my first job, and my husband bought me my own machine for our first Christmas.

I wanted to make it for my bedroom when I was married, but my husband is very very very opinionated about house decorations and didn't care for it.  So I decided for our second Christmas that I would finish it and give it to my in-laws for their bedroom at their cabin. It is made of plaids and old used levi's from various family members.  It is huge--a California King.  Clipping the Rag side took FOREVER!!!  However, I finished it and if you look close at the picture you can see that I pieced the bed skirt out of levi squares.  It was awesome.  I used an old sheet for the bed skirt and it was so perfect.  Then once we got to the cabin on a trip I had them show me what they wanted for a valence and I made one for their bedroom and a matching one for the kitchen.  They then bought pillows so I could use the rest of the fabric for shams.  It turned out great.  I am glad that I didn't know what I was doing when I first bought fabric and I bought at least twice what I needed so I had extra for all the rest of the bedroom and now for a few more projects for myself.

The quilt looks as if it were perfectly made for that setting.  Love the matching valance.

The good thing is that you finished it and went on to do more quilts.  Love how you were able to do all of the other things with the fabric to tie it all together.

What a great quilt!  It looks so at home in that cabin, too.  You are a clever one with the shams, skirt and valance.  I still have all those old jeans that I saved to make a quilt with one day.  You've given me ideas....oh, oh....
