This is the first sewing project that got me into quilting. My cousin made a quilt like this for her bed when we were in high-school and I loved it. I decided that I needed to make myself one, but then took 4 years to start. I was in college and one day I saw one of my roommates with her sewing machine sewing. I had put it in my mind that I could not start quilting or sewing until I was finished with school. So, I entered a fabric store for the first time alone in my life bought a rotary cutter, mat, fabric and batting. It took me four years to finish this quilt while I finished my bachelors and master's degrees, got married, got my first job, and my husband bought me my own machine for our first Christmas.
I wanted to make it for my bedroom when I was married, but my husband is very very very opinionated about house decorations and didn't care for it. So I decided for our second Christmas that I would finish it and give it to my in-laws for their bedroom at their cabin. It is made of plaids and old used levi's from various family members. It is huge--a California King. Clipping the Rag side took FOREVER!!! However, I finished it and if you look close at the picture you can see that I pieced the bed skirt out of levi squares. It was awesome. I used an old sheet for the bed skirt and it was so perfect. Then once we got to the cabin on a trip I had them show me what they wanted for a valence and I made one for their bedroom and a matching one for the kitchen. They then bought pillows so I could use the rest of the fabric for shams. It turned out great. I am glad that I didn't know what I was doing when I first bought fabric and I bought at least twice what I needed so I had extra for all the rest of the bedroom and now for a few more projects for myself.
