This quilt was made for my son-in-law's grandparents on his father's side. It was presented to them on our trip to Turkey where they live. The pictures included their son (who had recently passed away), their grandson (my son-in-law), and their three great-grandchildren. They are simple village people of very modest means, but hearts of gold, faces carved with decades of character, and eyes that swallowed you with kindness.
My son-in-law picked the general color theme. I took that to the fabric store and designed the quilt based on the fabrics I found. The photos were the focal point, of course, and then I just designed as I went the rest of the way. Each of the three quilts made to gift when we went to Turkey needed to be different in design and color, but all were using the same photos. Presenting this quilt was very bittersweet since the loss of their son was still very fresh.
