I made this Civil War-themed quilt for my Sweetie, who is also the enthusiastic Enabler to my Quilting Addiction (not to mention a primary financial backer). Jeff is a WWII buff, and quite conversant with the weaponry of that era, but my heart just wasn't in the making of a Tank-themed quilt!. So I picked a war with nicer block designs.
As a blissfully ignorant beginner, I picked a challenging sampler to make. I didn't know about this site, and all the other quilting help online, so I just forged ahead from scratch. Since I have an engineering background, it wasn't scary to scout out pictures of antique blocks online, then draft them to the scale of my quilt. In 2009,I hadn't yet heard of templates and patterns!
It was my first attempt at both piecing and quilting. I keep waiting for it to fall apart, but, after 18 months it's still soldiering on nicely, keeping my sweetie warm on winter nights.
