Last year our quilt guild had an "ugly" fabric challenge. As we said no fabric is really ugly, but there are some that we have in our stashes that we don't like, can't use, are leftovers, etc. We were each to bring in a yard of fabric for which we had no more use, they were cut into fat quarters that night and then divided up into 4 different bags. Those who had brought in fabric could then go through the line taking a piece of fabric out of each bag, WITHOUT LOOKING, so that we should have four different fat quarters to work with. The challenge was to make something with those fabrics, adding from our stashes as much or as little as we wanted. We could do table runners, lap quilts, wall hangings, whatever we wanted. I got so carried away that mine is large enough for a twin bed. I used up a LOT of my stash, only having to buy some of the white on white fabrics so I could keep going. The pattern came from a magazine, I don't recall which one, but had only four or five of the zigzag rows and they all faced the same way. I made more and turned them in toward each other to get the design I wanted.
