I was inspired to create this from things shared from: Film In The Fridge! Love her work. http://www.filminthefridge.com/

But the real inspiration was this was my first 'pieced on paper" quilt since my first one - at age 8. I made that one with my grandmother. It was 20 years before I made my second quilt. I don't think she would like this quilt design very much, but she was very much with me in spirit as I made it. I do think she would like that I did what I wanted to, based on her instruction. So many memories came back to that summer in about 1972...

I learned much about shading, shadows, and strip size. I really hate how my idea to use different sized strings made a mess of some of my points. And my goodness, did I learn I need to do better at setting that first seam on the strip.

It was very much fun cutting up my phone book for the backing paper - I found I could cut an 8 inch width, so I made 8 inch squares from my old phone book.

Browns and Black

My adaptation of Elisa Wilson's quilt featured in a Hoffman ad from last year. I thought it would be easy like a log cabin using strips, but noooo, the directional strips tried to get all wonky on me. But it did satisfy my desire to work with browns. I played with different household items for dying fabric last year. The quilt still smells a bit like celery and bay.

My First Quilt

1989. I had no idea what I was doing. I was 26 years old. I had pieced on a paper with my grandmother 14 years ago. I had survived Home Ec at age 13, actually wearing the dress I created without disaster. But my amazing husband gave me a sewing machine for Christmas, sew... I wanted to use it. I didn't know fabric, I didn't know traditional patterns. I just played around. 2012 - this thing is still out and in use - almost everyone that has put their butt on my couch in front of the TV has grabbed this thing to cover up. It is not quilted and I've only had to retie it once. I love this quilt top.

Denim Rainbow Rag

Completed in Dec 2011, this kept me warm through my cheap a** winter of not turning on my heating. I had never done a 'rag' edge and I can't say its pretty like some ragged quilts I've seen. I didn't know to avoid stretchy denim yet I do know it now! But I love how fast this created itself from idea to finished.

The Beast's Quilt

My second denim creation named for my cat because he took a strange affinity to the thing as I started to lay it out. He sat on it for two days, hissing and yowling at me if I tried to move him from my work space. I had to take the broom to him! This is denim from several teens I know who out grow jeans just as fast as fashion changes. I had done a rag finish on my first quilt and wanted to make this one a bit neater. I had a Tommy Hilfiger sheet found still in the original packaging in the thrift store, so when I found Tommy jeans in my collection of denim, I made sure I had a labeled pocket on one square.
I have so many scraps in so many colors. This contains clothing my son out grew, my late husbands shirts, fabric old than I am from my grandmother's stash, and things from many tote bags and previous quilts.
