"I Spy" Quilt for Lit Ray

I made this 33 1/2" X 42" "I Spy" Quilt for my Great Grandson Raymond who is 18 months old. It is machine pieced and quilted with a walking foot on my Bernina 730E. The fabrics are 100% cotton and the batting is Warm n' Natural also 100%cotton. The blocks are cut 5 1/2", the borders are 2 1/2" and the set in corner blocks in the inner border are 2 1/2" squares. I also made the bias binding.

Raggedy Quilt

This 64" X 72" raggedy quilt was made for my Granddaughter. It is made of 100% cotton assorted fabrics and 100% cotton Warm N' Natural batting. It is a two sided quilt in that one side is ragged edges and the other side is the sewn seams. The seams are sewn 1/2" instead of the normal 1/4" quilt seams. The 8 1/2" blocks are machine quilted as you go. The blocks are layered one block, right side down, then a piece of batting cut 6 3/4" laid on top, then another 8 1/2" fabric square placed on top of the pile. With a walking foot, sew an X from corner to corner. Sew the blocks together in a row. After constructing each row, the seams are carefully cut every 1/4" thru the edge but not into the sewing! After all the blocks are sewn together, stitch around the entire quilt edge 1/2" in, sew it twice. Then rag cut the edges every 1/4" just as the blocks are done, being careful not to cut thru the stitching. I did not add a binding on this quilt as I want it to "rag".

This quilt is washable and dryable and will rag more each time it is washed. They are fun quilts to make and will not require special care. I love them because it can be taken to a picnic, the beach, etc. I made one for myself and I love it!!

I love Fon's and Porter's rag scissors for this cutting process.

"I SPY" baby quilt

This 31" by 41" "I Spy" baby quilt is made with assorted100% cotton fabrics. I made it for my Great Great nephew for his first birthday. The batting is 100% cotton Warm n' Natural batting. I machine pieced and quilted this quilt. The blocks are 5 1/2" unfinished fussy cut blocks, 2 1/2" border strips, and the inner border has 2 1/2" squares in the corners.The cost of materials was approximately $45. This was my first time to machine quilt a quilt. I used my walking foot and my Bernina 730E machine. I made a bias binding for the edge of the quilt.

I enjoyed making this quilt and plan on making three more for my Great Grandsons, one is 18 months old, another is 3 months old and one is 1 week old. They can snuggle up, "spy" fun items, match two blocks, or find colors, etc.

Framed 16 patch block quilt top

I made the twelve 16 1/2" unfinished framed 16 patch blocks in 2004, and added the 51/2" ujnfinished border Jan 22, 2012. Definetely a work in progress! LOL The 100% cotton fabrics and muslin were machine pieced on my Bernina 730E, and I will use that machine to machine quilt this top. The unfinished size is 58" X 74".

Antique childs bed and Bear Claw Quilt

Cuddle Up Quilt (Pineapple Patchwork) and Lemon Meringue (Alternate Nine Patch)

I made these two quilts in 1994 for my two Granddaughters, Delanie and Danielle, for Christmas. I will described each.

The patterns were from the "Possibilities" book "P.S. I Love You" Baby Collection, Authors Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith. Each of the two patterns I chose were from Lynda Milligan. "Cuddle Up" is on page 22 and "Lemon Meringue" on page 30. I used the Pineapple Ruler, and the strip piecing method.

The Purple quilt on the right belongs to Danielle. It is called "Cuddle Up" and is a "pineapple patchwork" design. This was my third project I ever made. It was for Christmas of 1994. I purchased a pretty doll at K Mart in Madison, Alabama and then chose the same colors in it's dress in six different 100% cotton fabrics to make the quilt. The 30 blocks were 4 1/2" blocks. No Sashing was used, but two borders were added. The inner border, a pink and white stripe, was 1 1/2". The 3" outer border was a floral print. The Batting was Mountain Mist. I used Roclon unbleached muslin for the back. The finished size was 30" X 40". I do not recall the actual cost or time spent on this quilt. I do know I bought a total of four yards of 100% cotton fabric from Wal Mart in Fayetteville, TN. The muslin came from the Craft Bear Shoppe in Decatur Alabama. It took about two days to machine piece the top of the quilt. It took me five or six weeks to do the hand quilting, done as I had time. I made the 1 3/4" bias binding added to the edge. I think I started in July 1994. Danielle was 3 1/2 yrs. old when I gave her this quilt for Christmas. I really enjoyed making this quilt!

The Blue quilt on the left belongs to Delanie. She was 22 months old at the time. It is called "Lemon Meringue" an "Alternate Nine Patch" design. This was my fourth project. The story is the same...for Christmas 1994, to "match" a doll from K Mart in Madison, Alabama. I chose three different 100% cotton fabrics and Roclon muslin was used for the backing. Mountain Mist batting was used. The 30 machine pieced blocks were made up of fifteen nine patch, small pink floral, and fifteen unbleached muslin squares. A 4 1/2" blue border was added and a pink floral hand made binding sewn to the edge. The finished quilt was 30" X 36" . I took one day to machine piece the top and 4-5 weeks to hand quilt the quilt. It was allot of fun to make!!!

UFO-Small Redwork Cupie Doll Quilt

This unfinished, nine patch,100% Cotton Redwork Cupie Doll Small Quilt is 27" X 27". I made the redwork blocks while I was laid up in 2002 for 3 1/2 months because of Charcot's which is a complication of diabetes.

Rag Quilt

This is my 65" X 76 1/2" personal Rag Time Quilt made of assorted 100% Cotton fabrics and Warm N' Natural batting. It was rotart cut, machine pieced and machine quilted as you go. One 5 1/2" unfinished fabric square is placed right side down, then a 5" square of batting is laid on top of that piece of fabric, then add another 5 1/2" square of fabric right side UP. Sew (Quilt) from corner to corner in an X formation. Lay this aside and continue to build blocks until you have the desired amount to make your quiilt. I used 238 completed squares and sewed them 14 finished blocks across and 17 down. Usually a 3/4" seam is used, but I chose to do a 1/2" seam as I sewed the blocks together. The outer edge does NOT have a border or a binding. I only sewing one line completely around the edge about 1/2 in. As this quilt is used and repeadedly washed, it will "rag" more. My cat Moses and I love to cuddle up in this quilt! There is nothing better than my comfort cat and a cozy quilt I do not have to be overly concerned about!! I call it my controversal quilt because some people do not like the exposed seams, "Rags" as they are called. Moses and I think it is the "Cat's Meow"!!!!

Start date was Jan. 18, 2001 and finish date was Feb. 8, 2001.

String Doll Quilt

This 22" X 26" quilt was paper pieced in 2006. 100% cotton fabric and batting, machine pieced, hand tied.

Small Crumb Quilt

This 100% cotton 12" X 15" little crumb quilt with 3 1/2" blocks was inspired by the internet after a cousin mentioned she loved making crumb quilts. I did not know how they were made so I googled it.

It is paper pieced with random left over pieces of other misfit blocks and small scraps of fabric. It was hand tied when finished. A binding was added.

Special Baby Buggy Quilt

This machine pieced and hand tied 29" X 29" quilt is special because the red blocks are made from a fabric that my Grandmother, Mamie Leota Pearl Wittenmeyer Phillips, had used to cover a baby buggy. I machine pieced it and then hand tied it. My Grandmother was known to go to a dump, (Land fill) in Bradner, OH and come home with more than she had taken to throw away!! She would recycle everything she could! She had brought home a rustic baby buggy, covered it and we played with this buggy when we were young. In 2000, my Mother, Betty Jane Marsh Phillips, gave the buggy to me. I removed the buggy lining and washed it. The fabric had alot of worn areas, but I managed to salvage just enough to piece it into this quilt. My Grandmother made many memories with us, taught us frugal ways are to be shared. She used coffee can lids to make us little dishes to play with. She spray painted them, added a sticker, sealed it with clear varnish, and wa la!! Beautiful dishes!! She would be proud that I recycled the fabric from that old buggy. And yes, I have the old buggy, too! It needs alittle repair and then I plan on placing this quilt in it. Completion date was May 2000.

Crayon Color Block Quilt

This 52 X 64 quilt is special because while we were living in TN, our family from OH often visited us. My neices and nephew liked for me to have a project or craft for them to do when they came. I decided a quilt would be nice and the kids enjoyed doing the blocks. I had planned on giving the quilt to my sister, the children's Grandmother, however she passed away from breast cancer before I was able to get the quilt to her. It was machine quilted by Debra Ledbetter from Pulaski, TN.

Magic Stack N Whack made by my Mother

After making my Stack N Whack, my Mother wanted to make one. It was her first quilt. I loved how her colors turned out!!! It is not completely finished. I just need to add the binding for her. This was machine quilted by Debra Ledbetter, Pulaski, TN.

Bear Claw Quilt

I made this 51 X 64" 100% cotton lap/crib size quilt for a beautiful Little antique oak bed we purchase for our grandkids to use for sleep overs. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. I used a 100% Cotton Warm n' Natural batting. The twelve 11 1/2" Bear Paw blocks were set together with a 2" sashing. Two 2" borders were added to finish the quilt. The backing is a small antique looking cotton fabric.
