The hearts in the centers of the blocks remind me of the symbol used by the House of Blues in New Orleans. Paper piecing is a great technique for getting precise points and shapes. It didn't take me long to make this quilt. It's about 54 x 60. It hangs in the bedroom and helps me wake up in the morning. A professional longarm quilter did the free-motion quilting.

Koi Quilt

This quilt is made mostly of Japanese fabrics, some of which are from cotton kimonos. My small quilt group or "bee" made this quilt. I had collected blue and white Japanese fabrics for several years intending to use them in a Storm at Sea quilt. When I got over my fascination with Japanese fabrics and quilts without having made the Storm at Sea I offered the fabric to the Bee for a charity quilt. One of our members embroidered koi fish in the center and around the center of the quilt to give it some pizzazz. Another member donated some blue fabric with koi fish in the print - again to give the quilt a touch of color here and there. We donated the quilt to Tucson's Quilts for a Cause which auctions the quilts to raise money to donate to the Tucson Medical Center for treatment of women's cancer. I made this to enter in a contest associated with the 75th anniversary of the Smoky Mountain National Park. The pattern was supplied by the contest organizers. Quilted by a professional longarm quilter who does marvelous, creative free-motion quilting. she quilted the name of each block and a brief description of what it represents about the Smoky Mountains in the sashing and quilted the name of the quilt across the top. She quilted turkey tracks in the turkey track block, bear tracks in the bears paw block, butterflies in the butterfly block, a little fire in the red center of the log cabin block, and little canoes in the crossed canoes block..
