I started working on this quilt just this week. There are some others who want to work on it, too. It's pretty simple, and can be made with patriotic colors or not, your choice. If you want to work in this one, let's do it!

Here are my fabrics for the Split Star. The 4 at the bottom of the stack are the blocks and the red at the top of the pile is the sashing. The blue is the border. I'm in the middle of cutting patches, but didn't accomplish anything today. The DH's car broke down so we spent most of the afternoon getting it towed.
I too will be making the Split Star pattern, here are my fabrics.
The first 4 are the blocks; next 2 the sashing and the cornerstones; last on the right the border and binding.

Sharon, I printed off the pattern and really like it. However, I do not have Thangles. So, what size are the HSTS supposed to be? I will cut 3" (skip that 7/8" stuff) and trim them down. I have to go shopping, don't have enough fabric yet, should have it by the weekend.

Pat. cut the sqare patches 2 3/4 sq, for finished size of 2 1/4. For the triangles, cut squares 3 1/8, and then cut on the diagonal. Be sure to post pics of your fabrics!

The QOV Split Star pattern available free on the www.thangles.com website expects you to use the Thangles tool to cut the triangles. See The QOV Split Star Project for cutting the patches without the tool.

I'm glad this question came up because I missed those instructions. I'd rather do the Split Star with the Thangles since I only purchased enough fabric to do it that way Where can I purchase the Thangles? Would my lQS carry them?

I couldn't find the Thangles in my nearby quilt shops so I was thinking of using the alternative cutting instructions. I bought enough fabric using the Thangles amounts, do you think I would need more fabric to achieve this or is the amount so litlle it doesn't make any difference?

Marie, I did the estimation using EQ7 and it's the same amount of fabric. The thangles method uses slightly less fabric, but the difference is not enough to change the yardage requirements for a lap size quilt.
Sharon, your block is lovely.
I sorted my stash yesterday, and found a few fabrics that will work, but I'll need to buy more at the LQS. I'm going to make mine with a ten-inch block instead of a 9-inch block, because I use a different method for HST's that uses a template. I don't have a 2.25 inch template, just 2.5 inches. The larger size is still well within the QofV requirements.
