Finally, my enlarged quilt for my 6'4" grandson in Iraq.  Finally "carved" out enough room to spread this on the floor.  Couldn't smooth it out - carpet took over and no room to keep moving around it.  Got dizzy trying!  Hope to get chance to quilt it soon as he will possibly be back soon from his second tour.  The base is being turned over to the Iraqi's.  Would like to give it to him when he gets home.  Borders are 6" (the too-light one), 2 1/2", 1" and 2 1/2" to make it long enough to cover him.  That made it wider than I like, but it is as it is!!  Have backing - red and black print - and batting so should at least get it basted somehow.  Can't kneel on floor or get off it!!  Table is too small and have no room for a quilt frame.  I guess spray basting then basting to really hold.  Spray may not hold through fighting it through the machine.

Thanks, Leslie.  I have to get busy and get it quilted.  Zach just got back to Fort Hood, TX from Iraq this week and is spending his Thanksgiving at our daughter's near Houston.  I planned to give it to him when he returned, but didn't think it would be so soon!  Can't wait to see him.  I guess he will get his quilt late!

I'm sure he will love it when you give it to him.  He'll be thankful for the extra size to keep his toes warm :)!  Your colors really turned out  nice.  The light border really sets off the light nicely in the quilt top.  Great job.  What a wonderful Thanksgiving at your daughter's home this year.  Sandi, aka kwiltnkats

Sandi, thankyou for your comments on Zach's quilt.  I have to practice on some small quilts first before I quilt this one.  I will probably stitch in the ditch or outline stitch the main quilt but need some free-motion in the wide border and plain blocks.  I was afraid that border was too light but some quilting may help it.  I have thought of stars of some kind.  I have a pattern in my head but will have to see if I can do it.  I haven't done freemotion quilting yet but have done lots and lots of machine darning - farmwork is hard on clothes! - so am used to freemotion of sorts - just didn't put designs on work clothes!  I have used my darning foot for the intended purpose - DARNING!  Now I'll be using it for FUN.

I haven't talked to my daughter yet since Zach was there for Thanksgiving, but looked at Facebook today and saw he wasn't looking forward to a full day of flying, so he is probably on his way back East.  He wants to get his car and drive it back to Texas.  Hopefully we will get a chance to see him before he goes back to Fort Hood.  Our oldest daughter lives 120 miles away from us in PA.

I really like the way the light border sets off the quilt. Somehow it reminds me of the banners that military parents put in their windows with the stars on them -- very appropriate!
