Operation Valor - 100 Quilts of Valor

Calling all quilters! If you've never done a Quilt of Valor I encourage you to take a look at their website and enjoy! www.qovf.org. I am doing a project for my local veterans... We have an annual Vet's and Hawg's bike rally that is an absolute blast! I gave my first Quilt of Valor at that very rally. This year I want to have 100 Quilts of Valor on hand to present to our bikers who very often get looked over even though they are out every weekend riding for a cause for others...

If you would like to help me out I would be forever grateful!!! I'm looking for a variety of quilts in the smaller lap sized as most of them will be on motorcycles they need to fit in the saddlebags. They don't have to be Red White and Blue... go wild on them! There is a great new line called 'Vintage Motorcycles" that is a great choice because it has reds blues, and blacks in it! The deadline to send me a completed quilt is April 25th, 2013. All the standard guidelines for the Quilts of Valor is listed on their page. Hi Adele -

I was so glad to read your post! No worries on the typing - I'm amazed you can do it left handed! Sounds like your group is really active. I would be more than happy to send you the mastectomy pillow pattern. We don't use a specific pattern for the placemats - many of the women just "do their own thing" and some will Google "placemat patterns" to get ideas and free patterns. A lot of the ladies will use their embroidery machines or sewing machine stitches to embellish the placemats.

I hope that we can get more activity with this group - I love hearing about what others are doing!

my church group makes quilts for cancer patients, children's hospita, lttle dresses for africa, and we are a prayers and squares group. i am chair of the group and would love more information about the mastectomy pillows and the placemats for mobile meals.

Charity Quilts

Hi -

I am with a small guild and this is only our second year. We make three types of quilts - for Project LInus, a teen runaway shelter, and Medicaid homebound clients. For smaller charity projects we make breast cancer mastectomy pillows and placemats for Mobile Meals. It is so rewarding to see how creative the women are and how much fun they have.

We receive donations of various sorts and it has been fun to see the what people give us. Lots of times we get "orphan blocks" and one of our ladies will return them together as a top. Another thing we do is when we receive a donation of a cut out quilt without a pattern or half finished half cut out quilt pieces, we kit is as a Challenge Quilt and it has been amazing to see what some of the women have created!

We have a Charity Committee who cuts kits - all that is necessary to piece a top along with a pattern - and then we have regular "Sew-In's" where we sew all day. Quite fun and we accomplish a lot.

I'd love to hear what others are doing and would be happy to share/exchange patterns! Let me know!

I make quilts for Project Linus, too. It's so rewarding. I got some great ideas from the pictures on the link. Right now I'm working on some wonky 4 patches and hopefully this weekend I'll start some small Trip Around the World quilts.

Machine Quilting the Border

Hi Everyone... I'm struggling with how to machine quilt the border of a charity quilt. I am an "average" machine quilter -not long arm. I use charity quilts to practice my machine quilting. I would like ideas for the borders that do not take loads of time and are not difficult. Any ideas to help. Thanks!

PDA million pillowcases is a campaign that many quilt shops have gotten involved in. They also have free patterns at this site.

Susan - I don't know if you got any info yet on this. I make pillowcases for ConKerr Atlanta. There are a number of quilt shops around the Atlanta area that serve as drop points. I am pretty sure that Con Kerr all over the US may have the same arrangements. You might try Goggleing ConKerr and see if they have a chapter any where near you that can give you more information. If you don't find one, you can go to conkerrcancergeorgia.webs.com for more information including how to make them and package them.

I don't know if you found an answer but I know Marge has a hot dog tutoral somewhere on here.Marge usually posts in general forum and she can help .she makes for Conkerr.Not much help but if you need some help I will look further.

Thanks, Kathy. I just started working with Quilts of Valor this year. I am enjoying it quite a bit. I have volunteered to quilt two quilts a month and even got to do one for Marianne Fons! That was a highlight!

We give to the critical care unit of our local hospital. Usually the quilts are given when they go into hospice. It is a way to help make the last few days more comfortable and "homey" in a cold hospital room. I have heard stories from family members and thank yous so I think the effort is appreciated.

It is always fun to give to kids. Project Linus is the group I work with most for tihs. My quilt ministry is now a drop off site for Project Linus. I keep getting a little more involved all the time. Some day I will have to quit my day job to keep up!

You mean I have to pick one?

I love the military donations, I know the service members do to. With 3 sons serving in different locations, deployments and branches, they are very spoiled by caring contributions, but they should be for what they do.

I am a sucker for kids and seniors. Our society will always take care of kids, but I think we are weaker on the elderly, for many reasons I am sure.

Quilting is my passion, the recipients bring the joy to remind me why I give.

For those living in CO, Warm Hearts Warm Babies has chapters all over the Front Range and may have more in other parts of the state. They have donated materials if you need some. Check out their website: warmheartswarmbabies.org The donated quilts and clothing are distributed all over the state.

Hi Everybody

I am new to QCA and quilting. As a beginner quilter who needs lots of practice I searched for a way that I could get the practice I need and contribute to a charity. I found quilt for kids during my search and am going to start my first quilt for them this week. Since I am a beginner and don't know if I can meet their time frame yet I decided not to request a kit from them and use my own fabric. I purchased a few yards of different kid friendly fabric on clearance and am looking forward to making my first quilt for them. I will post pictures when its done.

I look forward to sharing and learning from all the members.

Sukochi - That is why it is so good to work with a group like Project Linus or Quilts for Kids. Or you can make pillow cases for ConKerr Cancer.
