I satin-stitch and quilt with metallic thread often and have several tips. My favorite is to use Tri-Flow lubricant, sparingly, on the thread. It's a great all-purpose lubricant. I'll have some more tips, soon, on Quilting Celebrations with Patrick Lose and will add some info on the "Extras"...
