Since George likes pies can I get a few ladies to bring me some pie pans.  I will need about 4  9" pie pans and will make some pies for dessert.   And hopefully we have a grocery store close by.

You used to see poached eggs on menus in the south alot but you don't see them in Virginia anymore.  I don't know about further south.  I know you are supposed to use poached eggs for eggs benedict but I have seen those change over to fried eggs in this region.

Nana:

Anybody up for Shrimp and Grits???

Ooh I'll eat shrimp. No to grits. Never developed a taste for it.

Since I won't be cooking I'll be happy to chip in for the cost of shrimp.

Nana, you can't spoil him like that! He'll get used to such treatment. LOL

I will have pie pans in the RV but, really, you don't have to make pies. Woman, you need to quilt. I do usually make a peach or berry pie to have in the RV when we travel.

Nana, you are truly a sweet woman.

Judy T, did you go into any grocery stores south of Lincoln City?  I know there's a small grocery store in Taft, but I didn't go in there.  There also is probably one near Gleneden and Salishan, but I am not sure...  Do you know??? (We usually just planned to buy at Safeway while we were in Lincoln City.)

Donna, we didn't do any grocery shopping during our stay in Lincoln City. We drove up and down the coast and ate out most of the time. Visited the big casino one afternoon. Waste of time, food wasn't great.  I do not recall much of anything between Lincoln City and the retreat location. South of the retreat is rugged coast line and winding roads. There is a fabulous little cafe at the lighthouse which is an absolutely must stop location. Quilters Cove in Newport is the closest quilt shop and that's 18 miles. She told me she would give us a discount if we gave her some worming.  I believe there is a Joann's in Lincoln City if we need emergency supplies.

I think there is a quilt shop in Toledo, Quilters Cottage, which is about 8 miles inland from Newport. I haven't been there.

How far is Lincoln City?   I am sure we will be able to find supplies somewhere.  What I will need to be able to fix a meal isn't anything major.  Maybe we can convince Gini to make scones and I can make some lemon curd to go with them...yummy.

As far as that goes I can always post a list of what I will need for cooking and some of you could maybe bring some items with you.  That is if there isn't somewhere close by to get supplies.

I can bring pie plates and a rolling pin, especially if you remind me closer to october!

I will have quite a few pie necessities in our RV such as flour, salt, shortening and stuff so no need to buy the basics.  You like to cook?  Good, I don't. I'll be on the clean up crew.

But I do have to say that I don't do much in the way of cooking when on vacation. (heck, I don't do much cooking when we're at home). We usually eat sandwiches and things I've prepared ahead of time such as casseroles, chicken etc. And we eat out quite a bit.

Lincoln City is just a few miles north of the retreat and there are grocery stores for anything we may need.

I'll be happy to bring supplies along too.  I'm used to cooking in rental kitchens with minimal supplies, so already have a tote with some supplies I can add to.

The Safeway is at the north end of Lincoln City and about 6-7 miles from the Retreat location...but through a LOT of traffic lights and a touristy area...so it seems longer.  I would suggest we try to plan ahead as much as possible, buy what we know we need but didn't bring at Safeway on the way to the Retreat house,  and then can buy last minute things in Taft (near the Retreat house) if necessary or when/if anyone goes to JoAnn's - which is next to the Safeway in north Lincoln City.

Another idea for a meal to treat those of you that have not been to the Pacific Ocean before is a Dungeness Crab Feed!  This is a down and dirty..."crack the crab on the table as you eat it" kind of meal...with the yummy crab juices dripping down your arms to your elbows. Lots of paper towels required!!!  Cracked Crab, Corn on the Cob, and a tossed salad make a yummy meal! Crab season ends in mid-August, but we know where we can get frozen crabs there (pre-cooked) that can be very good and reasonably priced for eating at home.

Anyone tempted?

That worming is reallllllly tempting, but, I can't.   If it was a few weeks earlier I might've been able to but October is just too packed.

I finally bought a decent vehicle that I can take on the road and my DS and DBIL are coming to visit in the next few weeks so I see a road trip to L.A. in our future. wonder if I could make a long  weekend out of 2000 mile round trip?    maybe not.
