Hi all,

I live in San Diego and was wondering if anyone is interested in a retreat in the beautiful Southwest?  Doesn't have to be in southern CA.  I have never organized one but will be willing to try, if someone can give me a few pointers.

All comments welcome.

Annie, I think you and Marlene and Maggie should put your heads together to come up with something for next winter!  I'll sign up for it right now!

I have no idea what's involved?  Do I find a place to stay? How many quilters show up? What about food??

Annie

I think a southwest retreat would be fun but it would definitely have to be next year for me to try and come.

Hi Annie

Maggie and I were talking about one in the Southwest ( AZ) - San Diego is def. too expensive I think. Its beautiful there but so pricey, unless you know of somewhere reasonable.

We just need to know how many people would be interested in coming to a retreat in let's say-- AZ area- and ask them what time of year- probably the winter months- its cooler then- and how long would they want to stay- and how much is affordable.

Do they prefer an actual retreat site- where they cater to quilters etc?

Or is a big house better for us - where we can cook and do our own thing?

The retreat site is more expensive- The ones i have looked up in AZ - generally charge about $350 for 3-days meals are included.  Also they are not in the Phoenix are but are about 2 or 3 hours away from Phoenix, therefore additional transportation costs getting to those locations.

We would need to post something separate under SW retreats to get something started so everyone would see it also.

But obviously it would have to be for 2013 as we have so many retreats for this year already.

I will friend you Annie!

Hugs

Marlene

Marlene,

I know we're looking at 2013, but here is Eleanor Burn's retreat she has set up for this year.

What do you think of the prices? and do we prefer to go less commercial, less people, more intimate?

2012 Available Dates

Session 1 - Fri-Mon, Nov. 9-12, 2012
Session 2 - Mon-Thur, Nov. 12-15, 2012

Fee $385 each, $700 for both sessions

Others have posted commercial events with the idea of seeing if some QCA-ers would like to meet up there, but up to now our retreats have been, as you say, less commercial, fewer people, more intimate, and we could add, less expensive since you also have to add in travel expense for those further away.

Annie

That is pretty expensive for those that have to travel any distance.  I also like the more intimate and less commercial.

i like less commercial.  i wasn't interested in classes or three meals a day, and  the less herding the better.   i wanted to have fun with my quilty friends while i sewed.   at leavenworth that's what we did for a week,  laugh and sew.   (some of us did more laughing than sewing,  and i'm not naming names).    we wandered in and out when we were hungry or needed a break, we didn't have a schedule to follow.   cheaper is better, too, that way there is more of an opportunity for everyone to attend.

I agree with all of you about the less commercial, more intimate setting.  I have a friend who rents out her 4 bedroom home on a daily or weekly basis in Phoenix during the winter months. I could ask her for her price, but not sure how many we can accommodate and how to set up a working area?
