Sorry wrong place..
Life is like a quilt...bits & pieces, joy & sorrow, stitched with love
That is correct Spud. 40 FQs will actually make 40 blocks. I went by the original instructions but couldn't decide on a layout that I liked using 40 blocks. I made 30 blocks and really only needed 15 FQs to do it.
Now that I have your neat question area all messed up, and you just got started, I think I will give up. I tried to move my question to the correct area and you must have been answering at the same time...Sorry!
Ok Nana, now I am confused. You said,
If using 10 fabrics, cut 2 strips 5 1/2 in X WOF (which will yield the equivalent of 4 - 5 1/2" X 22" if cut from a FQ)
If using FQ; cut 2 strips from each FQ @ 5 1/2 in X 22 in
So my question is this:
Since I am not using FQs, do I need to cut 2 strips from my fabric or just 1 strip?

If you are using FQs cut 2 strips 5 1/2 x 22 inches. Then cut these 2 strips to make (4) 5 1/2 x 91/2 pieces.
No problem Spud.
But I am NOT using FQs. So do I still need to cut 2 strips @ 5 1/2 in x WOF from each piece of my material?
So, if 10 different fabrics, (not FQs) I cut two 5 1/2 inch strips, which I then cut into eight 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 inch pieces. Take half of those and cut those into 2 x 91/2 and 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 inch pieces. So for each of the fabrics I will have 4 pieces of each size? Then if I want to enlarge, I could cut another strip of each and end up with 6 pieces of each size for each fabric.
I guess I just need to know the total of pieces I should end up with so I can know if my understanding and math are right. For the original size: forty 5 1/2 x 9 1/2, forty 2 x 9 1/2, and forty 3 1/2 x 9 1/2.

Sorry Nana, I'm already confused. Your cutting instructions say:
"Take one stack and cut a piece 2X9-1/2 and one piece 3-12/X9-1/2. Put the 2" pieces aside for use in border. You should have equal number of 5-1/2X9-1/2, 3-1/2X9-1/2, and 2X9-12 pieces"
Am I only cutting one piece from stack one 2X9-1/2 and one piece from stack one 3-1/2X9-1/2, and leave the rest of stack one uncut? And do nothing with stack two?
I'm sure the directions make sense to everyone else. I must be over thinking them.
Thanks

hi Nana - in the last step cutting don't you supposed to equally divide the stack befor you cut it? so you end up with equal numbers of the 51/2x91/2, 31/2x91/2 and 2x9/12 strips?

This is sooo why I'm such a newbie at quilting. The cutting instructions have me completely baffled.
all we need is 30 strips that are 5.5 x 9.5?
but then it says to take 1/2 the strips at cut 1 2 x 9.5 and 1 3.5 x 9.5 piece. But if we are using half the strips, aren't we going to end up with more than one of each?
sorry...but I am so very confused. I don't understand patterns well at all yet.

Hey Susie, you are not alone. I am in the same boat....lol

OK, I can't come up with the correct number. I'm using the 10 fabrics.
1. If I cut 2 strips from each fabric that would equal = (20) 5-1/2" x 42" strips. Right so far?
2. Then if I cut each of those 20 strips into 9-1/2 pieces that would equal (80) 5-1/2 x 9-1/2" pieces. Am I reading that right? WOF would give me (4) 9-1/2" cuts from each strip.
3. So then, if I divide into two stacks I would have two stacks of (40) 5-1/2 x 9-1/2" pieces. Am I still on track here?
Now, is where I fall apart......(assuming I have the above correct - LOL)
4. From one stack I cut ONE piece 2" x 9-1/2" and ONE piece 3-1/2 x 9-1/2".
Oh dear, if I do that, none of the rest of the instructions make sense to me.
So sorry Nana. Please don't hit me!!! I cannot wrap my mind around this.
In the beautiful Pacific Northwest!
You will need to cut 2 strips. You will need a total of at least 30 5 1/2 x 20 strips.
