The pattern as printed from Missouri Star called for 40 of each size. However I couldn't find a good way to layout 40 blocks. I only used 30 of each size. You will need an equal amount of each size cut and you will end up with the same number of blocks. If you cut 50 of each piece you will have 50 blocks. I hope this made sense .... if not I will try again....LOL>

Cut all of you stack one pieces. Each piece gets a 2 x 9 1/2 section cut off and laid aside. This will leave you with a 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 piece. When finished you will have the same number of 2 x 9 1/2 , 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 , and 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 pieces. You don't cut anything on your stack 2.

You start with 30 strips at 5 1/2 x 20 and cut them into 60 strips at 5 1/2 x 9 1/2. Divide the 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 strips into 2 stacks. Lay one of the stacks aside as they won't be cut. Now take the second stack and cut a 2 x 9 1/2 inch piece off of each of your strips. You will now have 3 stacks .... one at 2 x 9 1/2. one at 3 1/2 x 9 1/2. one at 5 1/2 x 9 1/2. Set the stack of 2 inch strips aside as these will be used in your border.
I hope this helps...... You will have 30 pieces in each of your cut stacks.

You are perfectly right up to the point of cutting one stack. Cut all the pieces in the stack with the 2 x 9 1/2 and the 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 instructions. Now you will end up with 40 pieces of each size.

OK Nana.... If what I need is 30 5 1/2 x 20 strips, then if I am cutting from fabric and not FQs, then I will need 15 @ 5 1/2" x WOF, since, when cut in half. will give me 30. And that will use my 15 different fabrics. Anyway, that is what I going to do. I am only going to cut 1 strip WOF and then in half. Sorry to be such a pain.....but I am afraid, someone will cut 2 WOF from their material and wind up with 60 strips instead of 30. Might want to look at those directions again.
NOW if I am still wrong on this, let me know.

If you are using 15 different fabrics one strip will be enough. If you are using only 10 fabrics you would need to cut 2 strips.
You are right- layouts with 40 squares don't work. I usually go to 42 and lay they out 7X6 and that gives me a good sized quilt for most purposes! Not sure how may blocks I will get out of the pile of fabric I pulled this morning. Going to use up a bunch of old calicos and other prints from last century. Should be fun!

If we are making 30 blocks.....do we need 30 5 1/2 x 20 strips 30 3 1/2 x 20 strips and 30 2 x 20 strips. I am looking for the BOTTOM LINE number of final strips since I will be using a combination of yardage and FQ.

However, didn't you say that you only used 30 blocks? If we are making 30 blocks do we need 40 of each size strip so that the extra ones can be used in the borders or elsewhere....or just 30 of each size strip?

OH THAT IS SOOOOOOO HELPFUL. Now I understand. An equal number of strips for each size (and 40 strips equals 40 blocks - 30 strips equals 30 blocks!) Fantastic.

To make 30 blocks you will need 30 of each size piece.
I think I finally got it... I'm using fat quarters, all different .
If I want a 5x6 block quilt I will need 15 FQs/fabrics... not 20 and cut 30 strips
If I want a 6x6 block quilt I will need 18 FQs and cut 36 strips
If I want a 7x6 block quilt, I will need 21 FQs and cut 42 strips.
Did you tell us somewhere the size of each finished block?
