I don't think I would try making the blocks smaller. I would use the 6 left over blocks for a table runner or even add them to the back of the quilt. You have chosen some beautiful fabrics.

Nana~ DEFINATLY NOT!! LOL-- I am not good at math!!! What I meant to say, you had mentioned that the 30 blocks would end up as 6 blocks by 5 blocks.. I was thinking if it would work I would make the quilt 6 blocks by 6 blocks. Some one had mentioned they might do 6 by 7 since they ended up with 42 in their pile, so I was thinking since I ended up with 36 I might be able to do 6 by 6.
Thank you... I really loved the kitties & couldn't resist that one for the big border :)
If you like square quilts doing 6 rows of 6 blocks will work fine.
Do you think mq7 would come out better doing the 20fat quarters verses the 10 1/3 yard cuts? I'm doing from my x-mas stash.

Nana: Debbie Do This pattern was actually designed to use several different fabrics. As long as the 20 FQs coordinate well the overall effect will be perfect.

Nana, I"m going to blame it on the fact that it's Friday and I've used my brain all week but... after reading this response I was happy until I read another where I'm pretty sure you told someone we only need 15 FQs. I also recall you said each will yield 2 blocks and a 40 block quilt doesn't work, it needs to be 42 or 36. Perhaps I'm confusing selvage to selvage WOF with FQ WOF. Can you help straighten me out!? :o)

If you decide to go with the 30 block layout you will only need 15 FQ. If you want to do a 42 block layout I would go with 20 FQs. You can get enough out of the FQs to make 2 more blocks.
Good morning Nana,
I am still trying to determine my fabrics for this and my biggest quandry is the borders. That doesn't usually bother me but I can't figure this out. I saw you told someone to not forget their background fabric for the inner border. So is the 1 1/3 yard for the inner 2 1/2" and the 4" border something that would work well as a background fabric? Then we still have the strips you had us set aside when cutting plus the 5 1/2" fabric for the outer border. Will those two touch? It sounds like there are four borders. Hope my question is clear Nana. Deciding what I want to use for the borders will let me know if I have enough still for the blocks. WOuld like everything to blend.

I suggest that you get something that will set off all the colors in your quilt top to use as your borders. I used a black mottled. I do suggest that you do at least the 2 1/2 and 4 inch borders. The last 5 in border is optional and could be a print from the quilt top or a print the sets off all of the fabrics used. I am not doing the 5 in border.
Yikes Nana, I read, read and re-read the directions and have royally messed up.
Instead of cutting 2 x 91/2 and 3 1/2 x 9 1/2
I cut:
2 1/2 x 9 x 1/2 now leaving me with 3 x 9 1/2.
Is there a way to salvage this mess or do I need to start all over ?

Just use the pieces the way you have cut them. The blocks will still work out ok. The over all finished measurement will just be a little different.
OK I think I have figured it out - I think I have enought fabrik to cut 3 1/2 x 9 1/2 to make it right.
Now I only need to cut down my 2 1/2 strips to 2 to get 2 x 9 1/2

Hi Nana,
A previous post (pg. 3) mentioned something about a background fabric. In the fabric requirements there is no mention of any background fabric. Unless this was referring to a border I am a tad confused. I will be shopping next week for border and backing fabric so would like to know if I need some background fabric as well.
Thanks

Hi Nana, thank you for hosting this mq7. I realize you've been bomblasted with questions, but hope you can answer one more that I haven't seen addressed. Would totally scrappy work for this pattern - as in, instead of equal strips, lots of scraps?
I am wondering the same thing. What is the size of the MQ 7 quilt? Before borders? and/or With borders as written?
Marcia
Is there a background fabric in addition to the FQ/Charm Roll requirements?
