Please limit your posts in this thread to questions about fabric selection or cutting instructions.  As new steps are posted, I will start a new thread for questions on those steps.  If you just want to chat about the MQ, go to Countdown to MQ 4.

Please be sure to post pictures of your fabrics in the Media section.  Seeing everyone's fabric selection is the best part of the MQ!

Hi Sandy, this is Pat from Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada.    I am very very happy to start this MQ4.   I am one of the 8 members of Quiltmaker Scrap Squad and that keeps me quite busy.    But I have been wanting to make one of QCA's mystery quilts and I am making this one, no ands, ifs or buts!!!!   I have a question for you regarding my choice of fabric.   I have been stash shopping and I really like these four fabrics and I have more than enough of each.   My dilemma is I don't know where to place the gold and the flower fabric.   I am enclosing two pictures where I interchanged these two, and could you please advise me on which choice is the best, in your opinion....

Thanks a million,

Pat

Hi Pat.  It's very hard to tell from a picture what the values are on these two fabrics.  They seem to be very close in value but because of their very different designs should have enough contrast to work in either position.  I mentioned in the forum that you could use a ruby glass to determine value or take a pic in black and white to see them in gray tones.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for your opinion Leslie.  What is it about the first one that you like?

I like the top choice best.  I like the way the blue "matches" the blue in the dark print.

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to the group.  If you go to the home page and look down at the left side you'll see a link for "Mystery Quilt Workshops".  The file for fabric requirements and cutting instructions can be found there.

Sandy, is there enough contrast between my med dark and dark fabrics? I simply cannot come up with another plan.

Thanks Elizabeth and Gini for your opinion.  Gini I also thought the top one blended more but the second one really stands out.  Not knowing what the top will look like makes me wonder if I want that pop or not?  And the mystery unfolds but not quick enough.  LOL

I've started cutting.  Question - are we really to cut hundreds of small triangles???  I thought it was usually advisable to put squares together, stitch on the angle, trim, and voila - a half square triangle.  Isn't it easier that way?  Less stretchy?
