I just use Coats & Clark thread for my appliqué. At a recent sewing retreat someone said to use silk thread. What are your experiences and what thread do you prefer for hand work?

Hi Maggie,

I use Presencia 60wt cotton thread for hand appliqué and hand piecing. Many people like silk thread because the stitches are nearly invisible. I've also used "Invisafil" from Wonderfil. This thread is polyester and comes in many colours and is not very expensive.

It really is a matter of personal preference. Try a few threads and see what you like. There are no hard and fast rules.

The appliqué group has a great leader (Gini) that can give you lots of tips on the matter.

Here's a thread on thread (lol).
