I've been working on Farmer's Wife with a local quilt shop group as well, and we were discussing some of the "oddball" blocks, such as Century of Progress. I have the book from which she took her block patterns - I think it's called 5001 Quilt Block Designs - and while there is no discussion of some of the quirks, I have a few ideas of how they happened.
First of all, I think that many of these oddball blocks were meant to be set in multiples - edge to edge - in which case they create a pattern that has nothing to do with the way that a block looks on its own. Century of Progress, for instance, creates shaded stars when set without sashing that leave the center of the block to be a bit of background, rather than the focal point. It's a pretty nifty block when it's used as it was designed. There are a few others that seem obviously so, although I can't remember their names. Tall Pine, I think it's called, is another that would look really nice set with no sashing, but looks pretty odd on its own.
Secondly, I believe that when books 5001QBD are printed there are not only honest mistakes but also intentional anomales built into some of the blocks in order to offer the publisher and author some copyright protection. That way if somebody indiscriminately lifted large chunks of the book, the publisher could easily point out that particular formations of the blocks could only have come from one source. My reason for believing this comes not only from experience in publishing, but also from reading some comments from the author of Dear Jane, where she mentioned that she changed some of the block layouts and designs for that very reason.
Copyright is tricky in this instance. The authors do not own the traditional or pre-1928 block designs, per se, but they do own the work and the diagrams that they've made in drafting them for publishing. This is why a quilt designer can sell a copyrighted quilt pattern using Monkey Wrench blocks. S(he) does not own the copyright to Monkey Wrench, but s(he) does own the instructions and illustrations that s(he) wrote for the quilt pattern.
Just some food for thought. I can't add much more, since I'm not even close to being finished. At last count, I have 33 blocks finished, with my goal being to have a finished quilt by August for our quilt shop potluck. Wish me luck!

Wow! That looks amazing. I've still got 20-30 to finish. Did you double upwith the extra blocks or did you search out new and different designs?
And the cornerstones, were they hard to set up and match?Great job.

Great quilt. I have the FQ pattern, just haven't had time to start it yet. It may be something I work on at the retreat in October.

What a great job!!! I still have about 50 blocks or so to go and mine should be finished. My friend showed hers a guild meeting on Monday and it was wonderful her quilting was very simple as not to take away from the blocks and the true feel of the quilt she even backed it with muslin for that old world feel. I think that is what I might also do but not sure yet. Lisa
