Here's part of what Wikipedia says about Mercerization:

"Mercerization is a treatment for cotton fabric and thread that gives fabric or yarns a lustrous appearance and strengthens them. The process is applied to cellulosic materials like cotton or hemp."

I believe cellulosic means that it's a plant based, so that rules out synthetics.

Robin, you sounded more optimistic each day, so I'm happy you're getting to feeling better. By the way, just last night Audra asked me if I wanted a cookie and I just said yes without even wondering where they came from or what kind they were. I suppose I'm not what you'd call a cookie connoisseur, lol. Hope yours were good.

Diane, your roses are beautiful. I would love to have a block with that sort of beautiful work on it.

Stephanie, I am so happy to hear you are going to Expo with Sandy. You not only deserve a break. I think you need one. Can't wait to hear about all your exciting discoveries!

Jo, good luck today. Hope everything goes well and as planned. Check in when you can.

Lillie, I read where Shibori Dragon closed their physical store and now they're just online and at shows. Maybe they don't carry the ribbon anymore. I couldn't find it on their website either. Other possibilities for ordering are Silkribbon.com or Ribbonsmyth. I had to wait a long time for my Ribbonsmyth order and as I recall others here did, too. I liked Silkribbon.com and I think it took about a week to get. There's also Hand Died Fiber.com. Many others are out there, I'm sure. Of course you could get adventurous and buy white ribbon and dye it yourself....just a thought, he he he.

Hope everyone is having a fulfilling Friday! I will once 5 PM rolls around, lol.

This time around some of us are making an object and not just a block, so that'll be a little more fun. Also we're including pics or drawings of elements we would like to see included in our journals to give each other a clue of where we're going with our concept of the finished object.

With those exceptions, the guidelines are basically the same and are as follows:

Blocks will be approx. 144 sq. in, and can be in the shape of the finished project. Try to keep them to approx. 144 sq. in. total.

Blocks should be backed with a cotton fabric like muslin.

The pattern of the finished project, if any, should be clearly marked on the block showing where decorative stitches stop.

Fabrics can be made from any type---silk, cotton, linen, polyester, etc.

The bare block must be placed in a plastic bag and kept in the bag when a person is not working on the block.

The owner's name, address, and phone number should be on the back of the block and on the plastic bag.

A booklet will be placed in the bag for stitchers to make notes about what they did on the block. There is at least one page for each stitcher to write on. The owner of the block writes first to make personal notes about the block. This time around we are adding pics or drawings of some of the things we have envisioned for our blocks in the first pages. These should be limited to ideas for elements and not to finished projects we've seen somewhere. If you want to post a pic of the finished object you had in mind, you can do that in this thread, but it's not necessary.

The booklet is generally made from folded 9" x 11" sized paper (stapled, stitched or glued together) and the cover should be somewhat heavier paper like construction paper. A small purchased notebook is fine.

The booklet must contain a list of the participants in the order that the block is sent. You always mail to the same person; the person after you on the list. The last person on the list sends to the first person on the list. The name and email address of the stitch angel will be included in the list.

You post a picture of the bare block that you send out and then of each block after you finish your work, just before you pass them on to the next person to show the work that you did on the block. You post it for the group to see in this thread and also in Media. Also notify the group when you send or receive a block.

The block should be mailed in time so the next stitcher gets the block by the first of the next month after you received it.

If there are any problems during the round robin, the stitch angel must be notified immediately so that a solution can be made.

Remember that this will be mailed so lightweight is always considerate.

Last time we had a separate thread where we posted pics, but after awhile it became where we had discussions that followed after the comments on the pics and it was like having 2 threads to follow discussions, so I think we'll not do that this time. This time we'll post them in Media and this thread only.

Any suggestions are, as always, very welcome.

So, let the games begin!

There is a sheet of embellishments tat you are to use (if you like) on the purse. But as you can see my fabrics, wool felts and flannel, with just a bit of cotton fabric, can not take a transfer of their transfer. (?) Are we on the same page?? Cause I am so lost. It would help if I could show you the transfer page, but I guess that is not legal since it is in a magazine. Do I just try my best to find, online, how to do the stitches required? I do have a small embroidery book that I can get some directions from. Next to the cram wool on the red check flannel are some flowers I embroidered today. But, the page that has the instructions shows baskets, hearts, beads, etc. Do I follow what is on the finished product ,they have in a picture, or just do my own thing?

I spent Saturday in full motion. Why is it my house is always dirty and it can't clean itself while I'm at work. I clean til about 1:00 and then was able to settle into some piecing and work around my laundry. I made myself complete 5 more FWS. That makes a grand total of 85. Then I worked on my BOM for December. I posted the base for the block in the BOM section.

I didn't touch a UFO. I've got one out but it's so old I don't have any motivation to finish it. It was suppose to be for my oldest DD when she was in her purple phase. She is now years past it but the quilt is in pieces. I started it with Quilt University but the class closed before I finished it. Mainly because my friends husband was at the end of his battle with cancer and I spent alot of time helping her. But I really want to finish the top and quilt it. Then maybe give it to a charity. It has some mistakes that a newbie would make like poor pressing so I'm not sure it would be a good charity quilt. Maybe I can find the motivation to work on it next weekend when I have an extra day.

I am thinking of making a CQ table mat that will go under my candy bowl by the front door. I don't have much in my stash that is exactly Halloween and the fabrics at my local store are cute and all, but I wanted something a little more vintage looking. Here are some things I found on the net.

I thought I could print these background images onto printable fabric.

I also found tons of free vintage clip art to make my own silkies. I've posted the links below. I will be having a hard time deciding which of these to use. The victorians had a way of making spooky things cute.

I had a pair of pinking shears that were sticking, so I packaged them up and sent them to the company with a note saying "fix or replace, please. I just got them back today......A BRAND NEW PAIR!!!! Needless to say I was extatic. Soooooooooo excited!!! They were really quick too. it had only been about a week and a half since I mailed them. I have had regular scissors of theirs that I have sent back to be repaired also. You can find their address on line; just put in Fiskars. I hate all the strings you have when you use straigth scissors or rotary to cut.

I have another thing that I use that I really love.....I have a little pink iron that looks like a childs toy iron. I got it at JoAnne's. I keep it right by my sewing machine and I have a snack table to my left that I cut and press the fabric and the seams. It works really great. Not steam, just flat iron. It would be good for appliques also. I have one of the tiny Clover irons, but I like this one better.

My latest endeavor was to purchase a book called The Magic of Crazy Quilting by J, Marsha Mishler. Second Edition. It was dated 2003 by Krause Publications and I found it on Amazon.

There are many things that stand out in JMM's book's as she covers so many topics with everything from planning blocks, stitches, embellishments, history, painting, dyeing all the way to the meanings of flowers.

The part of this book that really stands out and I wish I could include a photo are the diagram drawings she includes as part of her stitch instructions. Not only are the stitch diagrams done well and large, but she has included a full page drawing of a block with all of the patches done in variations of the stitch she is giving instructions for. They are works of art in their own right., and the detail is amazing. They are done in red and white and she doesn't stop at just seam embellishment, she has added lots of wonderful "motif" style designs as well. They look so simple in the redwork style and easy to figure out. They list on the cover that she has included 1000 stitch variations and combinations.

You would definitely have to see this book to really appreciate it, but in all that I have purchased, I have to say this is the best so far as one that I can learn from and go to the next level with.

this is what i got in return for the golf quilt i made last december. remember i said the recipient is an artist, a real one. here is what my wonderful friend sent in return. she painted these on fabric in a weekend.

the bigger fish is about 18 inches. she sent this for me to finish as a quilt. i have absolutely no idea how to procede. it may not need anything but the quilting, but i am going to ponder it for a bit.

is this not a wonderful painting? i wish i had her talent.
