Jean:

I found this pattern on line today.  It went together pretty easy, still have to do the topstitching.  To keep the bag to stay open I used a plastic strip off the paper box at work.  Works pretty good.  Still need to do the top pin cushion part.  The pattern calls for using oor hinges, but I don't think I'm going to do that.  If I wanted to mail them, they would be pretty heavy.

Jean, this is like the one I have.  Was the pattern you found a free one?  If so, can you share the link??  :o)

Yes it was free.  http://WWW.merrimentdesign.com/pincushion-thread-catcher.php.  I personally would like the catcher part to be a little shorter.  I really like the ones Thea did.

I just took a quick look online and there are bunches of free patterns and tutorials available.  It's a good little gift so I'd say, go ahead and start a thread.  I'm not sure how soon I'll be able to post more.  I've got a very busy weekend ahead of me, starting today!

Last minute Lucy here.  My sister's birthday is on Wednesday and here's what she'll be receiving a little late (she's in a different time zone):

I used the instructions from this site:  http://www.merrimentdesign.com/pincushion-thread-catcher.php  (thank you to whoever posted that earlier) .  I used a 1# bag of brown rice to fill the pin cushion.  I tried to put boning in around the top but gave up after a while and just topstitched the edge and I think it'll be just fine.  Next time I think I'll make it just a little smaller.  This went together very quickly (except for that boning) and I have a feeling it'll be a goto gift for birthdays and Christmas for my sewing friends!

Instead of boning, I used the wrappings around the paper boxes at work.  They aren't very heavy, but hold the bag out well.  I just finished another one yesterday too.  Still have to go get the rice.  Did you make a separate bag for the rice or just put it it i the pin cushion part?

Jean, as I was pouring the rice in, it occurred to me that a lining might have been a good idea but I didn't stop.  I used a nice tight batik so it hopefully won't be an issue and I used really small stitches to close up the end.  That's a good idea to use those packing strips!  I'll have to save them the next time we get paper at work.  Thanks!

It is better to make a muslin bag to put the rice or plastic beads or sawdust in...

I recommend sawdust if you want to make a pin cushion - it sharpens your pins and needles ...

I used plastic beads in mine as I was just using it for a cushion to be weighted to hold the little scrap bag in place.  Barbara showed me another pattern that she has for one  - maybe we can get her to post a picture of the pattern - plus there are ones online that are free - I believe this as I have not searched it but will... soon...teehee...

I am finishing up the scissor part of mine - I finally got the velcro - I know i have some here somewhere and now that I have bought more I'll find it - but I am going to put velcro on so that the scissors can be removed as needed and I did put an extra long tail on so that you could use the scissors without having to take them off but it is always better to be able to remove them.

The scissors I am attaching should arrive tomorrow then I hope to have them out in the mail to their recipients... I hope - so little energy with all that is going on but the package is supposed to be here from fabric depot tomorrow - hopefully soon they will have their site where they take credit cards and the orders won't take so long - I love to buy notions on sale from them for gifts... this package was ordered 25 days ago... oh well... they will get sent when they get sent - just like everything in my life this month - messed up!!!

Here is my thread catcher.  I also used the pattern from merriment designs.  I made a muslin bag and used LENTILS LOL and then put some pillow fill to puff it up.  I figured this was the only way the lentils would ever get used :/  This was fun to make, but I will eventually make one with pockets for pencils, pens, scissors, tape measure....
