This pattern I found has a bag of rice in it for weight and poly-fill too.

Here are some gifts that I want to (try) make this year~~  I am still new to sewing/quilting so there are a lot of things I want to try that I'm sure you all have already made. If you have any tips, tricks, hints, please let me know!  I may make all or some of these...we will see! :)

Throw pillows for sofa or bed

Stockings

towels to match pot holders we're making here.

Aprons- I have made a few kid sized for my grand daughter when she crafts but want to make some for the cooks too!

Embroidered hand towels for bathroom.

iPad and Kindle covers/cases

Appliqued sweatshirts for the girls.

neck pillows for the travelers.

reusable bags---I will give them their gifts in them but they will be able to use them for shopping too if they want.

pet food place mats

Hoping for more ideas from all you guys too!!

Erin

Thea:

I would like you to post here any pictures or ideas that you have that you are doing for Christmas - things that would give our members ideas on what they can do - do not worry if what you are posting is not the easiest - sometiems hard projects are good to do too - and we are starting early in the year so we have lots of time.

Let's see your projects and pictures!

Don't know what you had in mind for the bags, but I have a simple pattern for bags that I love.  They are quick and easy and they are great for almost anything.  They are about 15 inches from top to bottom and 17 inches across.  They have two handles plus a tie.  They are really cute.

Phyllis, they sound great.   Do you have any pictures of them? I figure they will be great to give the gifts and use when shopping too.  Maybe Thea will pick your bags for a project!

Redrum helped me find my pattern.  what I can do - as far as a tutorial... I am going to make a few more of these sacks to give as gift because they aren't that difficult and if you buy the same pattern you can make one step by step with me.  I will not give the exact specifics on the size of the pieces but I'll show you how to sew the together and the small tricks that I learned while making them to make it a little simpler for me.  there are a few spots that are a little tricky and the author of this pattern gives great directions but there are still some spots that are tricky - I'll take specific pictures of how to do that and show you how I do it.  And maybe some of you can show your pattern - without specifics as we don't want to step into any copyright issues for QCA - but you could tell how you do some of the tricky parts...

For this pattern there are 2 spots that I think of as tricky - one is when you are putting it all together inside out and then turning it right side out and closing up that hole that you turned it through and the other is making the weighted sack to hold it on the table while the sack itself drops over the side.  You have a sack inside there that is filled up - I will show you how I got the poly pellets inside and closed up that little sack - you - as I said - can use walnut shells or sawdust inside this and make it a pin cushion instead of the poly pellets that this pattern requires.

I think this scrap bag is really cute Thea but I am going  to be frugal and make the free one I found online the other day.  I will try to take pics of my progress and give you the link to the page I found it if you like.  I will look at your pics and see if I can figure it out as well. I can use one at my sewing machine and one at my embroidery machine!  :)   PS: Redrum is a cutie- with the name he has, I am guessing he has the same psycho kitty attitude as my Grayson does! lol

I found this pattern on line today.  It went together pretty easy, still have to do the topstitching.  To keep the bag to stay open I used a plastic strip off the paper box at work.  Works pretty good.  Still need to do the top pin cushion part.  The pattern calls for using oor hinges, but I don't think I'm going to do that.  If I wanted to mail them, they would be pretty heavy.

Erin,  here are some pictures of my bag.  The last picture is the inside showing the "fold-over" which makes a gusset on the bottom to give the bag depth.  I"m probably not explaining very well!  It's a very versatile bag I have 4 of them and use the for everything.  I've made a couple for my granddaughter to use for "overnight" bags.

Phyllis and Jean all of your bags are nice!   Phyllis I like the style of your bag and think it would be great for a gift/reusable bag! I would really like to make some of those for sure. Tomorrow after I get a couple things done I will start my thread catcher bag. The more I see them, the more I want to make a couple!  I need to also make a quilted cover for my embroidery machine.

Phyllis...

I like those bags. I make some kind of a stockings each year for the kids and I was wanting to do the reusable bags this next year. I love the great ideas.
