Scrappy Squares

This is a project to use up some of those squares you have in your stash but aren't sure what to do with them. You can use 4, 5, or 6 in squares for this project. Just make sure all the squares you use are the same size. I used 4 in squares in this tutorial because that is what I have the most of.

First pick 8 dark squares and 8 light squares. It works best if each square is different but you can use the same darks and the same lights if you have a real problem with scrappy.

Second join your squares in light/ dark 2 square segments.

Now join your 2 square segments together to make a 4 patch block. Again do light/dark matching.

Now for the fun part.....

Take your 4 patch units and cut them 1 1/2 inches from the center seam on both sides.

Now lay the center segments from the 4 blocks in one pile and all the cut off segments in another pile. Take the cut off segments and mix them up and then sew them together trying to put light next to dark.

Now sew the segment that you just put together with one of the center segments that you laid aside. When completed you will have 4 blocks that look like this.

Take your 4 blocks and place your ruler on the center seam line and cut 1 1/2 inches on either side of the center seam.

Again lay the center segment aside and sew two of the cut off segments together to make 4 units. Put light against dark when matching the segments together and mix them up so that you don't have two alike together.

Now sew these pieces to the center segment.....

You will end up with 4 blocks that look like these.

Now join the block together making sure that you don't match any seams together. The construction at this point is the same as doing a 4 patch.

Using the 4 inch squares my block squared up to 12 1/2 inches. Make as many blocks as needed to make whatever size quilt you want to make. No stress. No matching. Just fun. Lay out all those squares you have hoarded away into 2 piles....one lights and one darks and just start sewing.

You will end up with a quilt that looks like it has been made with little itsy bitsy squares and people will think you worked so HARD....little will they know....LOL>

Nana, Thanks for sharing this, Looks like I need to cut a bunch of scraps into squares, I have to use up more scraps, every quilt I make just seems to generate more and more and more scraps!

Gee Gini you don't ask for much....ROFLOL> Sure I will get it posted into the pages section.....hopefully sometime today. I have almost completed enough blocks to do a 60 x 72 lap quilt in just a couple of days. It would have been finished if I hadn't been interrupted so many times for other requests..... "Hey Nana could you make me a pieced ball" " Hey Nana could you take up my bathing suit bottom before we go on our trip this weekend" " Hey could you wash some laundry and iron me some shirts"....... people in this house just don't seem to have their priorities in order...ROFLOL

so I just had to try this, my scraps are driving me crazy because the just won't fit in their spot, they keep multipling.

I started just like you said but somewhere near the end I layed my out wrong and I liked it better. A lot more seams to match but I didn't pin, just matched as best I could while sewing.

Now I just need to make a bunch more!

I think I'll just sew them together like this till it's big enough for a kid quilt and put a small border around it.

I didn't match any seams except for the 4 patch seams. I wanted it to be something that could be a totally mindless activity with no worries about seams matching. But I also like yours. Very pretty scrappy.
