Step 3 July Scrappy

If you are happy with your blocks the way they are you can start joining them together with 5 blocks per row and 6 rows. If you would like for the blocks to have smaller pieces then continue doing the same cutting procedures until you reach the desired effect. Each set of cuttings will decrease your block size by 1 inch. I was happy with my blocks after the first cuttings so I have sewn my blocks together and am working on borders. For some reason I still haven't taken a pic of the top but will post one as soon as I can get some help holding it.

Just have fun with your blocks and play away.

Step 2 and reveal June Scrappy

Now it is time to sew your blocks together.

First row.... start with a nine patch , then background square, then nine patch etc. until you reach 10 blocks.

Second row.... start with a background square, then nine patch, then background square until you reach 10 blocks.

Continue in the same repeat until you have 11 rows. Sew the rows together and add borders as desired. I started with a 2 1/2 in background border to frame all the nine patches.

I hope you enjoyed this project and really like your quilt. Admittedly this is a very "simple" scrappy but I hope it helps get everyone ready for a true scrappy quilt with our next project. Have fun and post pics as you finish.

Alright all of you wonderful guessers. You are absolutley right. Now turn that block and do the same cuts. You will end up with a 11 1/2 in square. Have fun. I have loved seeing the ones that have been posted. I think it is so neat that you end up with some teeny tiny pieces that make people wonder how in the world you sewed those little suckers in there.

STEP 1 JULY SCRAPPY

Find the center of your block. Lay a ruler on the block with the 3 in line over the center of the block. Now cut the strip on the right side of the ruler and lay this in stack one. Now you will need to turn your ruler so that you can cut the left side of the block. Again lay the ruler with the 3 in line on the original center line of your block. Cut the "left" segment off of the block and lay in stack two. Place the center section in stack three. Continue this process until you have cut all your blocks. Now lay stack one right side up, stack two wrong side up, and take about 4 pieces of stack three and place on the bottom of the stack. This helps to keep you from sewing the segments back to the same original block segments.

Now sew the segments from stack one to the segments from stack two. Now sew this combo to the stack three segments.

You have now completed this step. Don't worry about trying to square your blocks at this time.

Block with the ruler 3 in line on the center so that the right side can be cut.

July Scrappy Project

This is to just give everyone plenty of time to sort thru their scraps. You will be using anysize scraps that you want to make a 12 1/2 in block. You can combine squares and rectangles, different size squares, what ever it takes to make the block. You also don't need to use the same combinations to make each block. This way you can use up what ever you have in your stash.

If you have questions please ask and I will try to clarify. Also use a good mix of light, medium and dark fabrics.

Step 1 instructions scrappy project.

Take out 55 of the background 2 1/2 in squares and lay aside. Sew a dark 2 1/2 in square to all of the remaining 2 1/2 in background squares. Press seams to the dark. Now sew the remaining dark squares to the opposite side of the background square. You will have a dark, light, dark unit Like pictured.

Now sew the 55 remaining background to the remainder of your 2 patches to make 55 light, dark, light units. Like shown below.

You can now assemble these into 9 patch squares. Always start with the dark at the top and bottom and the light in the middle. I recommend that you try to not use the same dark patch in the same block if at all possible.

Press all seams toward the dark. You should end up with 6 1/2 in squares. Have fun and use lots of different fabrics for a really pretty look.

Sewing can begin.

Carol has so nicely volunteered to lead a scrappy project with all of us. She wants to use one of Bonnie Hunter's patterns called Diamond Strings. Just keep scrolling until you see it listed. Click on Diamond Strings and then download the pdf file that comes up for you.

Carol will start with instructions, steps , and pics on September 1. I hope that many of you will join in on this project and have lots of fun working together.

Tried a new scrappy project

I was so inspired by the June scrappy project that I bought a magazine of scrappy projects and this is my first project from there.

I will confess that this is a very controlled scrappy because I only used 8 fabrics and was very selective in the placement of my pieces when making my rows.

Lots of fun and I will be doing this again with more abandon and less control. Probably only control I will not give up is that I frogged a few times because I rotated triangles when joining and ripped out so that the strip sets all faced the same. A dear friend made one with me and she chose to leave her turned pieces in. She thought it added to the finished product. I am still too OCD to let go that much.

Working on the quilting now.

Finally got my June Scrappy quilted. Just need to make a label and sew on the binding. Wanted to practice large feathers instead of meandering and am so happy with the results. The beige is really a soft gold.

I have the ruler somewhere and never used it. Glad it has a purpose now. Looking forward to beginning. How easy it has been to get buried under UFO projectts a vow I made to myself to never get into, hahahaha.

July Scrappy

Nana, please don't laugh at me. I had too many 3 1/2 strips and when cut they still remained 3 1/4" squares. So, in my tired haze I slipped some the wrong way and some of my blocks are a little short. I am in the process of squaring them up to be all the same size. Did throw away strips that has 1/4" at ends. Didn't want to bother with them. To amuse myself and work on something that I really like I started the Boxy Stars pattern with other scraps and am enjoying myself. Am learning a lot about myself and control issues. I will finish the July scrappy and find a home for it :-)

Scrappy Shaded Nine-Patch

Hi everyone,

My neice's wedding in Kennebunk was a beautiful spirit filled and really fun weekend. It was great to be with all my family, extended family, and meet the grooms family from Illinois. From the church wedding - bride sang to groom, Dh and my daughter dear played lovely irish airs on fiddle for processionals - singing was beyond compare with DD and the bride and 2 other gals singing vocal harmonies-we got in a good groove-and the 4 hour ferry ride in Casco bay was bonding. My readings from the song of songs were a success despite my nerves- priest offered me a new job as a lector. haha like i haven;t got enough to do with quilting here.

Rushed home Sunday and finished the borders last night after work.

I am so inspired by everyones quilts here. I love using all the scraps. Thank you Nana! I used 37 fabrics in the nine patches although i controlled it by the limited color range of purple, blue, pink, and black. I had the jewel tone reds yellows and greens ready but the over control thing happened. Then i suddenly had to shade the nine patches. It was soo much fun.

How do you organize a scrappy stash?

I am trying to bring some order to my fabric. I read about members having collections of 2.5 quarter squares. This made we wonder what dimension or sizes do people organize into (or use the most). I have started cutting smaller scraps into 2.5 squares, I have a plastic container for them.. And I have some 2.5 inches stripes, otherwise I am clueless.

Also is there a piece you consider too small to save (being realistic about being able to use it). I have not even started the scrappy quilt. I finished MQ6. And just finished a quilt for my DH, Still want to do one for a friend who just lost her mother. But I have saved the instructions in a word document. I'll live vicariously through you all until I get caught up. Also used most of my scraps in MQ6, so sort of starting over putting together 2.5 sq

I love seeing how everyone's quilt turns out. They are beautiful.

Hello, my name is Melody and I love scrappy quilts. Although I love looking at all quilts and types I prefer to invest my time and money in quilts that will go on a bed and keep a love one warm. I have sewn for years and have done just about every craft out there. I have 2 adult children and much to my sorrow 0 grandchildren. I do have a grand pup, named Diddles and 2 grand kitties named Big Kitty and Little Kitty. My husband and I live in Mo but will be moving to KS with in the next year.
