Hawaiian or not - I didn't know about this method. And one of these days I might just make a Hawaiian quilt. They are beautiful. Thanks again.

Many thanks for finding this. Now Maggie and I can do the tree properly! I was stressing!
gini: yep and these are the instructions i wanted to add this photo, before i lost it. this is how you applique an intricate design without it going all over the place. i draw the pattern on the fabric and leave the fabric intact. i cut the fabric away 3 or so inches ahead of where i am working. this is how hawaiian applique is done. i only cut away one side of a branch as i go. once the branch is secure i can cut away the entire second side if i want, but don't go farther than that. if you tried to cut this tree out and then applique it down. your branches would not go in the right spot and it would be really uneven. and as you can see i've cut away about 4 inches, bad gini.

Wow Gini, this was so helpful. Especially with the photo. Makes it really easy to understand what you are saying. Thanks!!!

Thanks Gini, that helps a lot.
Marlene, have you started it yet? I'll cut out the background square and trace the tree onto the "tree trunk" fabric you shared with me today so I can start applying it tomorrow. Is 9:00 still good? I can hardly wait!
I finally finished it!!!!!

Thanks Gini. I have to credit Marlene for the leaf placement -- she reminded me that you taught her to put the darker tones near the bottom.

Woo hoo Maggie. It looks beautiful.
Your pear tree looks beautiful! I recognize some of those fabrics! LOL You did a great job on your leaves! I think I will send mine over to you! The colors on the pears and leaves are so pretty.
Thanks! I am so glad I finished it! Spent today laundering fabrics and sorting. VVas never a pre-vvasher but, yes the fabric does feel better and "needle" better. So soft. : - )
Pretty pears, Maggie. I love your fabrics.
