When I trace applique templates onto plastic I use a #2 pencil.  After cutting the template I have smudges all over my fingers & the template.  I like number/label my templates &/or mark the top so I know how to place it on the fabric before cutting.  I always end up with the pencil marks coming off or smearing.  This is especially frustrating & when I use white fabric & the pencil smudges ends up on the fabric.  I've tried permanent markers - they are not so permanent.

My Question:  What kind of marker/pencil can I use that won't do this?

I don't know, this is how I do it and I don't have a problem.   I use mechanical pencils mostly and I only mark on the top surface that doesn't touch the fabric.  I don't get smudged fabric or fingers, so maybe tryout some mechanicalpencils.

Hi Gini.  I use both a regular #2 pencil & a mechanical pencil & have the same problem.  Also with mechanical pencils, I must press too hard or hold it too tight because inevitably the lead breaks/pops as I'm tracing.  Although I mark on the top surface I still get lead smudges all over my hands, fingers & the template plastic.

So very frustrating.  I need to find a permanent marker that you can't erase, wash off, or rub off of the template plastic!   I will continue my search.

Have a great week!

I finished the 4th Vase (lower right side) for my Love Entwined a few days ago and today started working on the zig zag border that goes around it.  38 on each side.  It took me a while to figure it out but I was able to get most of them cut, sewed & pressed.  I hope to glue baste them tomorrow.  Lots more to do on it, but here's my progress so far.  I think 3 or 4 more borders, but I love it.  Just not the zig zags.  I want to take it with me to work on while I'm at my son & daughter-in-law's in El Paso next week.   Have a great weekend!

Barbara in Colorado:
Yippee!  I have finished block 4.  Love this quilt!

Very nice Barbara. Love the fabrics.

I'm still working on the washtub and berries block. Almost done with the stems.

Gini that's lovely. Did you buy it from the UK site? It's on the US site for $16.64 (FYI).

The quilt is lovely so I'd love to do join in on this one next year.  I've already pre-ordered the book on Amazon.com (USA).

I went to their website too. I feel I should buy from them to make up for Amazon undercutting them on the price.
