this block is fairly straight forward. the flower was one piece so i found a mottled fabric to help get some variation in color. i made the bud in three pieces like the pattern. i think using a varigated material and doing these buds in one piece will work just fine. if you look at the calyx around the bud, you'll notice that i didn't add the deep v's. my fabric wasn't happy about the teeny turn allowance and i listened to it for a change and made the calyx easier. i haven't added the embroidery yet. i'll probably wait until a get a few made. i took a picture of the blocks i have cut out. this is going to be a pretty quilt. i think we'll all be happy with this choice of pattern.
one more thing. buds are usually darker than their flower. because i am using a dark material, i need to go lighter with some of my choices. so the bud on the phlox is quite a bit lighter than the fower.

Very nice looking blocks Gini. Do you have a list of the order that we will be doing the blocks? I must have missed it.
Kathie
kathie, i picked out the four easiest blocks to start with. we'll see how everyone does with these four and then decide how quickly everyone wants to procede. the next two are 11 and 12, charming century and wild blue eyes. and california loosestrife
thanks everyone. these were pretty easy, they'll start getting harder.
Gini, very beautiful...in typical Gini style!

It looks like you did you stem and calyx with one piece of fabric. Did you cut this as a bias strip and make the stem and leave the one end larger or did you just cut with a template?
Vinton, Virginia
i did make it in one piece. i try to cut as much of the piece on the bias as i can, but i use a template. when you have a long stem like this, if it is cut on the bias, you have more leeway if you want to move/bend it.
i try to cut all my pieces as much on the bias, as i can.
Thanks. I had thought about using the bias stems I had made and cutting the calyx separate but I may try to do it as one piece instead.
ok I have missed something somewhere ,What is a calyx,? thanks
Pretty block Gini.
Barbara: ok I have missed something somewhere ,What is a calyx,? thanks
Barbara it is the little green place that the bud on the flower comes out of.
