  • To Wash or Not to Wash Fabric's

    Hi There, I am wondering if quilters should always pre-wash and iron all their cotton quilting fabric's before starting a quilt or any projects.?? The reason I am asking - there seems to be different opinions on this.?? I know if is going to be say...a wall hanging most do not wash there fabric's...

  • Is it always necessary to wash fabric scraps before piecing?

    I have been given a large supply of fabric scraps - many are very small pieces. I would like to use these in a scrappy quilt but but I'm not sure whether they have been pre-washed. I hate to think of the ravelly mess I would end up with if I had to wash all the pieces first. I would think the quilting...

    Andrea, if you have enough fabric, you could cut off a small piece to test for color fastness. Put it in the temperature water you would use to wash the quilt, shake it up & see if it bleeds. If you want to be able to wash the quilt once it's made, I would wash all the fabric so it shrinks before...

  • odor out of material

    used older material for the backing of a baby quilt. Had odor so machine washed with detergent & vinegar before put sandwhich together. As am quilting have noticed odor still there. Should I continue to quilt and then rewash and what in to get musty odor out? Is it beyond redemption? Please reply...

    I pre-wash when I am using polyester fiberfill but not when using cotton. I do it with poly fill because the poly fill won't shrink with the cotton fabric. With cotton fill, I like to let the fabric shrink with the batting for that old look.
