  • Dealing with monofilament thread

I like using monofilament on special quilts, but I ALWAYS have issues with the thread unwinding while I sew and getting stuck underneath the spool, causing stretching and breaking. I took a square of batting about an inch larger than the base of my spool, cut a hole in the center, and placed it on the...

  • Wobbly thread spools

Whenever I have a spool of thread that wobbles on the post, I use straws to help tighten up the spool. You can use more than one, in graduated sizes, too. Really helps.

  • Need suggestions for quilting with metallic thread

I decided to step out of my comfort zone...instead of using invisible thread and stitching in the ditch, I'm trying a Sulky metallic thread and using the blanket stitch on my sewing machine. It started out just fine, but now the bobbin thread is pulling thru to the top and the metallic thread occasionally...

  • Staying green and ready to go.

I am sure we all have someone in the house taking some sort of prescription med. Have you ever thought of how many of these pill bottles go into landfills. Most only need to be wiped out with a dry paper towel to be made safe. The come in a variety of sizes and the labels remove quite easily allowing...

  • Tying threads so the know cannot come undone

When I need to tie a knot so it won't come undone, I use a 'surgeon's knot'. Picture tying a knot. You turn one thread under the other, pull then repeat, right? Well, Instead of just turning the thread under once, do it twice. On the 'repeat' part, do it twice again. It holds...

  • Re: which Brand of thread is the best?

You're right, everyone has an opinion on thread. Instead of listen to everyone else, I decided to just try different threads. In the past, I used a lot of Coats & Clark. When I bought my Bernina, I changed to using the better quality threads. I started with Gutterman and Mettler threads. I found...

  • Re: It's Time for MQ V!

I've been looking through my magazines at the Christmas wall hangings. I made one last year for our motorhome. It was one of those last minute panels and I added some borders and then quilted around it. It really did turn out cute and the kids did like it, so that is important. I started to cut some...

  • Re: Which type of thread?

I do both piecing the top and quilting the quilt. I was always told the reason we use cotton thread to piece is because it shrinks with the pieced cotton material in the same way when washed - polyester may cause bunching because it doesn't shrink when washed. I do occasionally use polyester when...

  • Which type of thread?

Hi everybody, I have a question that I just thought of as I was getting ready to start sewing my pieces together for my very first quilt. So bear with my ignorance. I know to use quilting thread for the actual quilting, but should I also use it for the piecing, or can I use regular thread such as polyester...

  • Re: Who loves to combine quilting and machine embroidery?

Hi Jean! Congratulations on your new machine. What make did you purchase? Insofar as answering your thread question is concerned - I can only tell you what I do. I have a Brother embroidery/sewing machine and have chosen to use Brother embroidery threads with the machine. They work so well together....
