  • Washing pre-cuts

I always machine wash my fabric before I use it in a quilt. But I'm new to using pre-cuts. How does one deal with washing jelly rolls, layer cakes or charm packs before use? I'm afraid to wash them for fear of them fraying to bits. Or do you just hope for the best that the fabric won't run...

  • Re: Washing fabrics

Andrea, if you have enough fabric, you could cut off a small piece to test for color fastness. Put it in the temperature water you would use to wash the quilt, shake it up & see if it bleeds. If you want to be able to wash the quilt once it's made, I would wash all the fabric so it shrinks before...

  • What is the hardest part about quilting?

I'm getting ready to start my little window pane baby qulit. I'm new to quliting. I am thinking I'll just cut and sew blocks and strips just like anything else I do, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something. So tell me what the hardest part of quilting for you is. Also, what should...

  • Re: To Wash or Not To Wash....

I started out prewashing because that is what I was told I was supposed to do. Now I never prewash and have not had a problem. Decided it was a lot of work and really did not make enough difference in my finished product to matter.

  • Re: To Wash or Not To Wash....

I have always pre-washed if it is a quilt that will be used and laundered ... don't pre-wash if it is a wallhanging and probably won't be laundered. But, I recently read a section in Quilters Academy Vol. 1 by Harriet and Carrie Hargrave that has changed my mind on this. I'll try to summarize...

  • Re: To Wash or Not To Wash....

Thea, you're right! And I can't find the original discussion on this through the search function. Ah, well. Maybe some other people will add their opinions here! I've had quilters tell me they always wash everything, they never wash anything, or it depends on the project. I consider myself...
