  • OOPS!

My tip is one I learned by default! Always buy a little bit more fabric than your pattern says! Why, Murphy's Law: What can go wrong, will go wrong. and it's corollary: If the fabric is no longer available, you will make at least one cutting error and need extra fabric! When I sign up for a BOM...

  • Re: QCA Member Tip Contest - Post Your Entries Here

[quote user="Patty"] Because my cutting mat is dark blue (and my eyes old!) it is sometimes difficult to see the edge of dark fabric when lining up my ruler. I take a narrow strip of white paper (about 2-3 inches) and place it just under the edge and I can then see the fabric. When squaring...

  • Re: Cutting fabric precisely

Hi Lynne, you got some good advice already, but I didn't see this one: -if you have trouble cutting your fabric when it is folded just ONCE (meaning, you matched the selvages), try folding fabric TWICE. Yes, that may sound scary or as if will produce even more uneven strips - but it won't if...

  • Cutting fabric precisely

When cutting strips, place your ruler to the left (if your right-handed) of the end of your fabric. This allows you to place the line of your ruler completely, top to bottom, on your cutting mat, allowing you to eliminate the "smile" at the fold of the fabric. Place your left hand pinky beside...

  • Ruler Gripper in a Pinch

I have been having trouble with my square up ruler slipping, because money is tight I haven't been able to buy the grip adhesive that is sold for clear rulers. But as I was cleaning up after dinner, I noticed how the cling wrap stayed stuck to the kitchen counter so I decided to see if it would help...

  • Re: Embarassed Admissions

First of all........NEVER be embarassed to admit what you don't know. Every class I go to, every book I read, every video I watch I learn something new. Even if I don't really learn something "new" I may be learning a different method that makes it easier to do or gives me a better...

  • Re: I need a cutting lesson.

I've brought this thread up for Leslie. Leslie: There are a ton of tips on this thread about cutting, and a coping strip. You probably will have to set the thread to bring up at least a year of posts. One thing on cutting that I caught myself doing is: When I cut and I always cut from the fold (...

Gini, I have always cut from the folded side because that was what all the books showed that I learned from. I just looked in my new quilting bible (Quilter's Academy - Vol. 1), and they recommend folding the fabric twice so you are only working with 11" wide fabric then align the folded edge...

  • Re: I need a cutting lesson.

i have a question. i have always cut from the selvage to the fold. i was at a quilting thing for our guild last month and the president was teaching the beginners to cut from the fold side to the selvage. i didn't want to confuse the issue in a beginer class and i forgot to ask later. why cut from...
