  • Dealing with monofilament thread

I like using monofilament on special quilts, but I ALWAYS have issues with the thread unwinding while I sew and getting stuck underneath the spool, causing stretching and breaking. I took a square of batting about an inch larger than the base of my spool, cut a hole in the center, and placed it on the...

  • Know how old your needle is

I stick a piece of masking tape on my sewing machine. When I change my needle, I write the date on the tape so I can be reminded when it was last changed. All too often I have sewn with a dull needle and this subtle reminder works for me.

  • Barnaby's Bands - Winter 2012 Easy Quilts

I absolutely LOVE this quilt. When my Mush was alive she could often be found "helping" me with my quilts. As I was reading this pattern, I thought this would be a perfect quilt to quilt the sections before sewing them together. I plan on giving that a try. When? Well, that's a different...

I cut the backing one inch larger all the way around, unless it is the final edge. I cut the batting the same...

  • recycle mattress pads

Here's an article I wrote about my mother's quilting idea. When my dad had cancer and was bed ridden, she recycled old mattress pads into bed pads. This would make a good service project for older girl scouts working on their Gold Award. http://www.examiner.com/children-s-arts-crafts-in-panama...

  • Tip: Use fabric panels to practice machine quilting.

I have a tip for you. Use assorted size leftover fabric panels to practice machine quilting and then use them for gifts such as pillows, wallhangings & quilts for a quick & easy gift to let someone know your thinking of them. Kathy

  • Domestic MQ- using your fancy stitches

I saw the cutest child quilt last Saturday at a baby shower, the quilter used the serpentine quilt to sew on the lines instead of quilt in the ditch. It was beautifully done and I was impressed. I am just wondering does anyone else ever use any of the fancy stitches on the machine to quilt their quilts...
