On the banks of the Mississippi River in north central Minnesota (Brainerd lakes area)
Wow MN Nancy! Glad nothing more than the birdfeeders got in their way. That is life in MN woods though. We were visiting my in-laws at Bassett Lake (north of Duluth) when we had a couple of bears wander in the yard. Luckily they were smaller and just looking around. My husband was in the barn/garage when one came in thru the doorway then turned around and left.. There's family stories of my husband's aunt beating off a bear trying to break thru her cabin door (same area) with a broom.

Gee Nancy,
that's wild. I think I'd be looking around corners to make sure it safe from now on. Good thing Calley came back when called.

Calley is our vizsla. I can't picture myself outside during the next bear visit offering treats to Calley if she'll bark. LOL!
I've always said that I'm excited to see my first bear...knowing full well that once I've seen one, I'll be afraid to run into others. Well, I guess I still haven't seen one. Actually, I think it's unusual to see a black bear during daylight. I think they're usually more active at night.

Aw, come on, Nancy! Where's your sense of adventure? LOL!
I love seeing wild life. What a thrill to have a bear. What else have you seen.
I have 2 bear stories, they happened to someone else.
My sister used to have a boat and commercial fished for salmon in Alaska. One time she took a day off and took her kayak up an inlet and river by herself. It was shallow in parts and she had to portage. At one point she looks ahead and sees a very large kodiak. suddenly it starts charging her way, well she tries to get in the kayak and head out as fast as she can knowing she hasn't chance, and it runs by her! It was charging something else!
The local school here takes all the 6th grade kids to camp in the spring. A very rundown old logging camp. The week before camp one of the teachers goes up to check it out, and see if there are any problem bears around, (somehow there always are.) Anyway, he takes this really loud blow horn siren thing that is supposed to scare the bears. He sees a bear and turns it on, bear, instead of running away runs to him, stops just in front of him and slams his paw on the ground in front of the teacher and snorts at him, as if to scold the teacher, then walks away. Mr. Gilmore said he was never going to use one of those again.
I hope you do get a chance to see the bear, but at a safe distance.

Scary for your sister, Patti. I love the story about the horn!
Judy Iliff:Aw, come on, Nancy! Where's your sense of adventure? LOL!
Go ahead and call me a wuss!
Patti, those bear encounters are much closer than I ever want to get!
Goodness Patti,
I would have had a heart attack in either instance.
Nancy
Glad everyone came thru the bear encounter alright.
Patti....love the horn story. I bet that was one scared instructor...LOL>
